Benfica is reportedly setting its sights on the Brazilian Serie A and has set its sights on Palmeiras star Facundo Torres, the 25-year-old Uruguayan winger who has had a brilliant season with Palmeiras. With Benfica looking to strengthen their attacking options in a competitive Portuguese league, Torres emerges as a tempting target. Known for his pace, technical flair and left-footed precision, he could inject new energy into Jose Mourinho’s side.
Torres’ career trajectory has been impressive. He burst onto the scene with Penarol in Uruguay, where he scored 20 goals in 71 appearances and helped secure the 2021 Uruguayan Primera Division title.
He moved to MLS side Orlando City for €9.7 million in January 2022, becoming a team designated player, scoring 37 goals in 123 matches and contributing to the 2022 US Open Cup win.
His form at Orlando City earned him a high-profile move to Brazilian side Palmeiras in December 2024 for up to €11.5 million, including add-ons. Torres’ contributions extended to the Copa Libertadores, where he added 2 goals and 3 assists in 11 appearances in the club’s finalist series.
Torres has shown versatility as a right-wing forward and as an attacking central midfielder, combining creativity with a defensive work-rate. During his 29 appearances for Palmeiras in Serie A, Torres scored six goals and provided three helpers in 1,669 minutes of action. Therefore, acquiring Torres would not be cheap.
Palmeiras, who has just finished securing this investment, could demand 20 to 30 million euros, taking into account his contract that runs until 2028 and a 20% sell-on clause from Orlando City.
How would Torres fit in? Benfica’s fluid 4-2-3-1 system thrives on dynamic wingers who can cut inside and create. Torres could be the ideal successor to the departed Angel di Maria and the Uruguay international could provide the spark the club desperately needs this season.
