Small reactors, big impact – a breakthrough in green technology

In this week’s video insight, the focus is on Rolls Royce’s groundbreaking technology that could transform the green energy landscape. They work together with Skoda JS to produce components for a new 470-megawatt-electric water reactor, which is compact and is able to feed a million houses for sixty years with zero missions. As the world shifts to more reliable energy sources, Rolls Royce’s progress in nuclear technology promises a smarter, emission -free future.

TRanscript:

Today we are talking about an energy-game changer and no, it is not a science fiction.

With the race to Net Zero, who hit the consequences of the second and third order, few people expected a recent announcement from Rolls-Royce to be able to offer a feasible solution.

Rolls-Royce steps on the record with technology that could fully increase the so-called ‘Green Energy’ story that we have been sold. Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactors-of SMRS has a milestone agreement signed with Czech engineering giant ŠKODA JS. Together they are preparing to produce the most important components for Rolls-Royce’s innovative 470-megawatt-electric water-turized water reactor design.

This is not the nuclear power plant of your grandfather. Each SMR module is only 16 by 4 meters-that is approximately the size of a billboard and compact enough to be built in a factory and to be sent to the site powerful enough to produce as much low-carbon electricity as 150 onshore wind turbines. One reactor can feed a million houses for 60 years, without emissions.

That is something to think about if you not only consider the damage to agricultural land and national parks that has already been caused by the role of the wind generators of Australia, and when you consider the amount of fossil fuels needed to produce and deliver them.

The magic here is in the modular build. About 90 percent of the reactor is prefabricated in controlled environments, so that the costs, delays and the risk are dramatically reduced. And Rolls-Royce has been ahead of his worldwide competitors in the regulatory race for 18 months.

The ambitions are huge: 1.5 Gigawatt in the UK, which feed three million houses and a maximum of 3 gigawatts in the Czech Republic. Contracts are expected later this year, with the first SMRs of the UK against the middle of the 2030 on the grid.

Worldwide, the momentum for SMRS builds up quickly. In addition to ŠKODA JS, Rolls-Royce works together with Czech nuclear operator čez, testing and evaluating components with újv řež and locks it in safety-critical reactor security systems with Curtiss-Wright in the UK.

This seems nuclear done smarter-emission-free, reliable Baseload stream, deployed faster than ever before.

Now, here in Australia, Minister of Energy Chris Bowen continues to tell us that wind and solar energy – supported by batteries and transmission – is the cheapest form of strength. But here is what actually happened since we started ‘green’: energy prices rose by 18 percent in 2022, 15 percent in 2023, 21 percent in 2024, and they are already 13 percent higher this year. That is an increase of 85 percent in four years.

Bowen’s Claims tend to the Gencost report of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSiro)-Gentions … But that is a report that is co-author of the Australian Energy Market Operator (Aemo), whose members are … You guessed the algaling of the industry and industrials, and with windfulness, and with windfulness, and with windfulness, and with windfulness, and with windfulness, and with the end of the industry, and with the end of the industry, and with the ends of the industry, and with fining tributers, and with the ends of the industry, and with the ends of industry, and the same-sized tributers, and the industry of industry, and with the ends, and and Tesla. But even that report admitted that coal is currently cheaper than renewable energy sources.

While Australia is doubling for weather-dependent generation and spiral costs, Europe gambles on nuclear and proven, zero emissions, 24-hour energy source. The SMRs from Rolls-Royce are not only a new technology-they are a new model for supplying affordable, clean energy to scale.

And the question is: shall we continue to pay more for less reliable electricity … or ultimately become a member of the countries that choose to keep the lights, the grid -stable and the emissions low? “” This is the future – and it will be built now. So, while the rest of the world buys iPhone 16s, the question is whether Australia will be left when buying iPhone 11s.
