Slot criticizes officials as Liverpool lose to Manchester City

Arne Slot has said the referees must ‘do their job’ after complaining that the decisions went against Liverpool in their defeat to Manchester City.

Liverpool lost 2-1 to Pep Guardiola’s side at Anfield as the Reds squandered a late lead and lost at Anfield. Dominik Szoboszlai scored the opener for Liverpool with a fantastic free-kick, but City came back to win the match through goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland.

In a chaotic finish, City scored a third on half-time when Liverpool threw Alisson forward. Rayan Cherki created an open goal, but the attempt was disallowed by VAR.

The referees withdrew the game due to Szoboszlai’s foul on Haaland as the two chased the loose ball, with the Hungarian sent off. Slot reluctantly accepted that the referees had to make that decision, but wondered why Marc Guehi was not sent off in a previous situation involving Mohamed Salah.

“A lot has happened, which is normal in this match. For us, we are disappointed to come away without a result,” he told BBC Match of the Day.

“In the first half, Manchester City were the better team without creating many big chances, but in our half they had more of the ball. In the second half we were on top and had good moments. We took a 1-0 lead and hardly gave anything away.”

‘Just before the end, one deviated cross lands well for them and the score is 1-1. We tried to prevent this and they won the first header. Good anticipation from Bernardo and good finishing.

“We are almost getting used to conceding a goal in extra time, today it happened again.

On the incident that saw Szoboszlai sent off, he added: “That is not the incident we should be talking about. Maybe he should have left it as it is for a purpose, but if that is the rule then that is what we have to accept.”

“If there is an incident we need to talk about, it is when Mo Salah is one on one with the goalkeeper. Anyone who has been in this stadium in the last seven or eight years, that is a goal for Salah. Once again the referee does not decide in our favor. They have to do their job.”
