Gravenberch looks back on ‘difficult’ defeat against Man City

Ryan Gravenberch has said Liverpool are frustrated after their defeat to Manchester City at Anfield.

Liverpool’s hopes of Champions League football were dealt a blow when the Reds lost 2-1 to the Citizens on Sunday afternoon. After a goalless first half in which City dominated, Liverpool improved after the break and took the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai’s spectacular free kick.

Arne Slot’s team was the better team after the break, but only conceded twice late on when a spirited comeback from City gave the visitors all three points.

Bernardo Silva pushed Erling Haaland’s knockdown for the equalizer before the latter fired home an injury-time penalty after Alisson’s foul on Matheus Nunes. In an eventful finish, City had a third goal disallowed, with Szoboszlai sent off as VAR denied a scoring opportunity.

The defeat leaves Liverpool in sixth place and five points behind Manchester United in the battle for the top four.

“Great free kick from Dom and then they score and then finally the referee’s decision to give a penalty and it becomes 2-1. After that it was difficult,” Gravenberch reflected on BBC Match of the Day.

“City were much better than us in the first half, but in the second half we were much better than them. That’s why it’s difficult to come away with nothing.”

“When we played them away, they beat us 3-0. We were in control today but we have to move on. Sunderland is waiting for us.”
