Senior British Clubs League players and local challengers will be presented with top-class competition to fill the standard ‘void’ on the BCL fixture calendar in January.
Six SBCL club venues across the country will be hosting 1* or 2* open tournaments on Sunday 18 January – and registrations are now open, both for SBCL players and those based locally for the tournaments.
The initiative arose from a proposal from players and clubs at the 2024 BCL conference to take advantage of the ‘free Sunday’ of the third playing weekend of the season, when only two rounds of league matches are scheduled on Saturday.
Singles tournaments on the following Sunday were typically limited in previous seasons, and not necessarily in the same parts of the country where players were already gathering – but not anymore.
Following the proposal from players and clubs, a consultation with existing and recent former BCL venues revealed overwhelming general support for hosting, with 13 of the 16 venues expressing interest.
And six of them have now completed the registration forms for this season’s competitions, all on Sunday January 18:
- Topspin Nottingham 2*
- Halton 2*
- 2*
- 2*
- Scarborough 1*
- Highfield TTC Wellingborough 1*
All events are also open to local players to compete against the Senior BCL visitors. Click here for access details.
Neil Rogers, Head of Competition & Events at Table Tennis England, said: “This exciting synergy provides new and valuable Senior Ranking competitions at the right level for national league players already physically present in the region – also giving host nation and local players the opportunity to have new blood in their tournaments.
“We are pleased with this initiative and very grateful to the six clubs organizing events in this already record-breaking Senior BCL season.”
