Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah rejected the “Dharmasthala Chalo” of the BJP on Monday as a political exercise and said that the opposition would not gain an electoral benefit of it.
He accused the BJP of hypocrisy and wondered why the party had not launched an agitation when the special research team (SIT) was first formed.
“After so many days, when they realized that nothing was found, they started this. Is it not hypocrisy?” he said.
The BJP has demanded a NIA probe in the Dharmasthala issue and also warned of a “Chamundshwari Temple Chalo” rally, which claimed that Hindu religious centers were the target of the congress government.
In response to this, Siddaramaiah said that the saffron party was trying to use religion for politics.
“They feel that Hindutva will be strengthened in this way. But I am also a Hindu. Being Hindu does not mean lying and spreading propaganda. Ware Hindus maintain humanity,” he noticed.
He also accused the BJP of dragging Mysuru Dasara to politics. “They would even use their own houses for politics if necessary. Contrary to lying, what else does BJP know?” He asked and added that the protests would not affect the State Festival.
The controversy was intensified after Vice Prime Minister DK Shivakumar recently said that Chamundi Hill and Godin Chamundeshwari belonged to every religion, not just Hindus. The BJP had a strong objection and called it part of a “toolkit” against Hindu institutions.
Siddaramaiah claimed that Dasara was a “Nada Habba” (State Festival). “It can be Hindu, but Dasara is celebrated by everyone, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains. We celebrate it together,” he said.
The BJP has also opposed the government’s decision to invite the writer of Kannada and the international Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq to switch on this year’s Dasara, with reference to a viral video where she reportedly had subdued the worship of Kannada as Godin Bhuvaneshwari.

Siddaramaiah defended the choice and said that Mushtaq was invited as a sign of respect for her international recognition.
“How much did the Booker Prize have won? She is invited to honor her performance,” he said.
Mushtaq, for her part, stated that her old speech was selectively deformed and distributed on social media.
