Benfica, looking to strengthen its attacking options, could target free agent winger Raheem Sterling, who has emerged as an enticing signing. The 31-year-old Englishman was recently released from Chelsea and would bring a wealth of experience to the club that could take the Portuguese league and Benfica’s European campaigns to the next level.Benfica’s concern could be the rust Sterling may have from lack of action this season, as he has unfortunately seen zero match action after being deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea and spending the first half of this season training away from the first team.
What you can’t do is take away the pedigree of Sterling, the four-time Premier League winner with Manchester City who scored 123 goals and provided 75 assists in 396 appearances in his career. Sterling would inject pace, dribbling flair and clinical finishing from either flank.
Sterling spent last season on loan at Arsenal, where he made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring once and providing five assists in 1,143 minutes of action.
Sterling earns a weekly salary of £325,000 at Chelsea and would have to take a significant pay cut if there was any hope of him making the move to Benfica. It would be a low-risk move for both the club and the player looking to revive his career, while Benfica would count on a boost towards silverware.
