Ships with Chinese cars are not the target of Houthi Militia – Jalopnik

From November 2023, the Houthi milities in Yemen began to attack or record commercial ships that sail through the Red Sea and Suez Canal, as a matter of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. According to a new report, the rebel group suddenly started to make a very specific exception this summer. Since June, certain car drier ships dared to make the journey, and none of them had been tampered with. What did all these ships have in common? They only wore cars made in China.

As the New York Times Reports, this almost certain means that China has cut a back channel deal with the Houthis, either directly or through their main sponsor, Iran. The latter is an oil power; Raw export is 6% of his entire economy. Who buys all that oil? Almost completely China. So the Asian super power has a lot of attracting here.

Strangely enough, this new regulation seems to be specific: they are ships that wear Chinese cars. A handful of non-Chinese ships, but also with such cars, have made it. Conversely, all Chinese cargo ships that do not wear cars still avoid the route.

China’s push on the European car market

The presence of China on the European car market has grown with jumps. In April, Chinese cars formed almost 5% of the whole thing, double what it was just a year earlier. Some estimates have that in 2034 to 10% to 10%, per S&P Global.

In response, the European Union has set rates on Chinese cars that receive subsidies from the Chinese government and are as high as 35%. Because cheap prices are one of the core keys of these vehicles, it makes sense that companies would be pretty desperate to find ways to compensate for the rates.

They may have found one. Avoiding the Red Sea adds 14 to 18 days to the trip, which means a number of extra costs for fuel, crew and maintenance. That amounts to a few hundred dollars per car; Because some of the huge new ships of China can each transport 5,000 cars, the financial hit is in millions. If those ships can literally take a shortcut, that is a huge saving for car manufacturers that they can pass on or pass them on to consumers.
