Sheffield Wednesday are keeping tabs on Timothy Fosu-Mensah as they await EFL approval for potential free agent contracts, according to The star.
Sheffield Wednesday are dealing with a worn-out squad after a disastrous summer. Their financial problems led to registration embargoes, limiting them to signing loans from only Harry Amass and Ethan Horvath.
However, following the reign and ouster of Dejphon Chansiri, SWFC has worked with the EFL to gain approval for some free agent additions.
Now, according to The starone man on Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer radar is Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
They report that Henrik Pedersen and the Owls have drawn up a list of potential free agent targets in case the EFL approves some out-of-window signings. And while there is no indication of a final outcome yet, Fosu-Mensah is a player shortlisted by SWFC.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah was out of the game for a long time due to interest from Sheffield Wednesday
Fosu-Mensah’s name is probably one that Sheffield Wednesday fans will be familiar with. After starting in Ajax’s youth academy, the Dutchman joined Manchester United’s youngsters in 2014.
He would make his big breakthrough with the Red Devils. Fosu-Mensah gained experience on loan at Crystal Palace and Fulham, but also played thirty games for Manchester United.
The 27-year-old would eventually leave Old Trafford permanently and move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2021. Fosu-Mensah played a marginal role there, making just 30 appearances in three years, but he still has a Bundesliga title and a DfB Pokal to his name.
The Sheffield Wednesday free agent left Leverkusen in 2024. He has since spent time training with Ajax, but may need time to get competitively sharp before stepping into prominence at his next club.
An ideal profile for Sheffield Wednesday?
The fact that Fosu-Mensah will likely need time to get up to speed is not ideal for Sheffield Wednesday.
However, the physicality and versatility he brings could be of great value to the Owls. The three-time Dutch international has played all over the pitch during his career, whether as a wing-back, centre-back, defensive midfielder or wing-back.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah – career appearances by position
| Position | Performances |
| Right back | 58 |
| Central defender | 19 |
| Defensive midfield | 15 |
| Left back | 2 |
| Right midfield | 1 |
His ability to play in numerous roles when SWFC is so short-lived could be key in deciding whether they make a move or not. Ultimately, the Owls may have to assess where he is in terms of fitness before making an offer.
If they pass up the opportunity to sign Fosu-Mensah, there will certainly be alternative options on the cards on Wednesday as they look to the free agent market.
