Sheffield United goalkeeper Adam Davies provides competition and depth on the bench.

Sheffield United have a big decision to make regarding the stopper’s long-term future. His contract with SUFC expires at the end of the season and as things stand he will become a free agent in June next year.

Davies, 33, joined the Blades in 2022 and was given a extension of two years at Bramall Lane in July last year. He was on Charlton Athletic’s radar at the time, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke Xbut ultimately nothing came of it on that front.

The Wales international, who has six caps to his name so far, is a useful player to have in and around the dressing room. He is experienced and has played more than 250 matches so far.

Davies is a safe pair of hands to call upon and is always ready in the wings in case number one Michael Cooper gets injured at any point. He has made one appearance for the South Yorkshire team so far this season, as they lost in the first round of the Carabao Cup to fellow Championship side Birmingham City in August.

Sheffield United must make Adam Davies’ decision

Sheffield United must start thinking about whether they want to keep Davies beyond this term. However, SUFC’s current focus will be on getting out of the relegation zone.

The goalkeeper will also weigh his options in the coming months. He is unlikely to be the Blades’ first choice ahead of Cooper, so he may have to leave if he wants regular game time elsewhere in the Football League.

Chris Wilder’s side risk losing him for nothing if they don’t cash in on him in the January transfer window, assuming he doesn’t agree new terms anytime soon. If he were to leave this winter, they would have to find a replacement.

Sheffield United signed Davies almost three years ago and he has made 16 appearances since then. He was part of their squad that won promotion to the Premier League in 2023 under Paul Heckingbottom, who is now at Preston North End.

What about Adam Davies at Sheffield United now?

Sheffield United’s decision to sign Davies midway through the 2021/2022 season was a wise move. He has been a good servant of SUFC ever since.

It remains to be seen at this stage whether he will still be with them after the end of his current deal. Time will tell whether they will choose to retain his services longer or let him walk out the exit door for a new challenge elsewhere.

As well as the Blades, he has also had spells at Everton, Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Stoke City in the past. He was born in Germany while his father was stationed serving in the British Armed Forces before his family moved to Warrington.
