The circumstances behind Jannik Sinner’s retirement halfway through his third round match with Tallon Griekspoor, must have been extremely disturbing, given that he defended his Rolex Shanghai Masters title and tried to close the gap on his rival Carlos Alcaraz who was absent in the event.
I thought we were lucky to play without sun in the evening, but two hours and 36 minutes on the clock, in the middle of the third set … I’m sorry for him, I wish him a quick recovery Tallon Griekspoor
The Italian world No. 2 withdrew with the score that was on 6-7 (3) 7-5 3-2 in favor of his Dutch opponent when Sinner, who struggled in the hot and humid circumstances, pulled cramps in his right thigh.
“This is definitely not the way you want to win,” said Griekspoor. “Brutal circumstances here in Shanghai all week. I thought we were lucky to play without sun in the evening, but two hours and 36 minutes on the clock, in the middle of the third set … I’m sorry for him, I wish him a quick recovery.”

The game was certainly brutally with sinner at the point of scoring a straight fixed victory, only for the Dutchman to collect and force a decision -maker who turned out to be a step too far for the Italian who showed signs of need – stretch, rubbing his thigh and frequent ice.
“The first set was of high quality of both, very dominant in the service games,” said the number no. 31 Griekspoor. “I thought he played an incredible tie-break: he put a few lines, served really well. I was lucky at 3-4 in the second, where I saved 0-40 and served a road out. Sometimes you need a little luck to win these games.”
The first Dutchman to reach the fourth round in Shanghai Tournament History will, after the qualifier, will also be for a rained out of China Valentin Vacheroi, after the qualifier. Vacheroi led Toma Machac 6-0 3-1 when the 20th seed was forced to stop.
Those two retirements brought the number of players who had thrown in their towel for some reason to 7 over three rounds with a few games that still had to be completed in round three. That must be careful for the organizers and the ATP tour, especially because a number of tent players do not progress as expected.
As already mentioned, the world no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is absent who almost retired on the eve of the game of the first day with a single injury that he picked up during his winning to the Japanese open title in Tokyo a few days earlier.
Then Stefanos Tsitsipas withdrew under a leg injury when the first round came along in which Lorenzo Sonego and Stan Wawrinka became the first controversial victims.
They were followed in the second round, by Ben Shelton, the sixth seed, Casper Ruud (11), Andrey Rublev (13), Frances Tiafoe, Marin Cilic, Alexnader Bublik (14), Karen Khahanov (9) and Jakub Mensik (17).
The biggest name to fall prior to Sinner’s retirement was the downfall of Taylor Fritz, the fifth placed American who opened the final of the Japan where he lost to Alcaraz.
And as he did then, his powerful portion was more than matched by the Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on this occasion when he was rejected 6-4 7-5.
Two former champions remain in conflict to repeat their performances of a few years and one of them is Novak Djokovic who is still one of the strongest players on the Tour at the age of 38.

“For me, organic, it is a bit more challenging to deal with it, but I really had to endure the storm today. Yannick played an incredible game from the start.”
Currently the third placed Alexnader Zverev is the highest seed over and is on paper, favorite for the title, but he himself has had problems with his big toe.
