Seven Colors once again paints a winning picture

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Heading into Saturday night’s $17,500 high-end conditioned pace at The Meadowlands, post-time favorite Seven Colors (Stay hungry) had won two of his previous six starts. In the four losses, he was defeated twice by Ken Hanover, Sabonis and newly minted Breeders Crown champion Ervin Hanover.

He showed off the class advantage he possessed over his foes, using a perfect drive from Big M leading pilot Brett Beckwith to win for the 14e time in 56 career starts in a sparkling 1:48.4.

With a bet of 2-5, Beckwith had an easy time against Seven Colors and settled into the four holes from the first turn when Handlelikeaporsche entered the field after the quarter in :26.1 and the half in :54.

Seven Colors was taken off the rail at five-eighths by Beckwith to chase the leader, and made progress when Lyons Steel blasted out of the two-hole, setting up a live drag around the far bend as Handlelikeaporsche hit three-quarters in 1:21.3.

Midway through the stretch, Seven Colors waved his cover and stormed home to a safe 1-length win, easily holding off a Mac’s Delight from the late rally. Lyons Steel came third.

“He was coming off a Breeders Crown elimination,” said Beckwith, who wasn’t concerned about coming off the pace. “I thought he would have a good last quarter of 26 seconds in him (it was actually: 26.2). I didn’t want to get into a speed duel with him early.

“It never hurts to have a helmet, but I think he would be fine anyway. Good horses prevail. It doesn’t matter what ride you give them.”

The five-year-old son of Stay Hungry-Rainbowinthedark, Andrew Harris’ intern, increased his lifetime earnings to just under $1.1 million. It is owned by Bill Pollock, Bruce Areman and Harris, and has returned $2.80 to its backers.
