Settlement of Mitsubishi Outlander Hood Flutter Lawsuit Reached

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander hoods may bounce and flap while driving.

– A collective settlement has been reached regarding the Mitsubishi Outlander hood flutter. A settlement has been reached between the plaintiffs and the car manufacturer.

The case involves 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SUVs equipped with hoods that can bounce while driving.

The owners who filed the lawsuit complain that Mitsubishi’s repairs haven’t worked and that driving the Outlanders makes drivers feel unsafe.

Mitsubishi has issued technical service bulletins about fluttering Outlander hoods, but the plaintiffs complain that all repairs, including replacing the hoods with new reinforced hoods, have not resolved the fluttering.

Technical service bulletins stated that dealers replaced the hoods and added weatherstripping and padding for free.

Mitsubishi also created the “2022 Outlander Hood Flutter Customization Special Customer Satisfaction Campaign.”

Dealers were told to “install weather stripping to resolve hood flutter around air ingress into the engine compartment. This procedure is in addition to TSB-21-42A-011 and will ensure that wind ingress is minimized.”

Mitsubishi also offered free loaner and rental vehicles for up to three days during the repairs.

But the plaintiffs complain that’s not good enough because the 2022 Outlander repairs “essentially” eliminated the hood flapping and bouncing but “did not completely eliminate the hood defect.”

The customers suing also complain that the color of the replacement 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander hood may not match the rest of the vehicle, and that the hood flutter problem is so severe that it worsens fuel consumption.

Mitsubishi denies all allegations in the class action lawsuit and insists the hoods are not defective.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Hood Flutter Settlement

Although the plaintiffs filed the class action lawsuit for more than $5 million claiming that Mitsubishi’s hood replacements and technical service bulletins were not good enough, those plaintiffs settled for just that: a TSB and hood replacements.

Warranty extension Mitsubishi Outlander hood 2022

The Outlander hood is replaced when a customer complains to a Mitsubishi dealer about hood fluttering. Effective the date of the settlement notice, the engine cover will be replaced with the same repair as described in TSB-21-42A-011REV2 (“MODIFIED COVER FOR COVER FLUTTER – 2022 OUTLANDER – REVISED”).

This includes the “necessary paint.”

The warranty extension for the fluttering hood is valid for a period of 18 months from the date of notification of the settlement.

If the Outlander hood has already been repaired or replaced per technical service bulletins TSB-21-42A-011, TSB-21-42A-011REV or TSB-21-42A-011REV2The warranty extension for hood flapping is 18 months from the date the previous hood repair was performed.

For an Outlander that has received a hood repair or replacement more than 18 months prior to the notification date, the hood warranty applies for six months.

And as with previous TSBs issued by Mitsubishi, the hood settlement says a customer may request a loan or rental car while the repairs are handled by a dealer.

The settlement covers model year 2022 Outlanders, meaning they were under warranty and owners likely wouldn’t have to pay for repairs.

However, under the settlement, a customer may be reimbursed for hood repairs if they were not previously reimbursed.

“If the Settlement Class Member received a free replacement or repair, or otherwise received the full amount for the repair or replacement, he or she will not be entitled to any refund.” — 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Hood Flutter Control

Plaintiffs Sarah Greendale and Vincent Viner will receive a joint award of $5,000.

Under the settlement, attorneys representing clients will receive $1,750,000.

Nothing is official until a final class action lawsuit is held on August 3, 2026.
