Getting more speed into your swing is a popular goal for many recreational golfers. But for many of them, the distance gains they crave are achievable by simply hitting the center of the clubface more often.
LPGA professionals are a good example of this. Despite the fact that their swing speeds are not excessively high, they are all able to create sufficient distance thanks to the quality of their shots. This blueprint is good to follow for most recreational players. One of the easiest ways to promote a solid hit on the ball is to swing at a better tempo.
At the GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teacher Summit a few years ago, instructor EA Tischler explained a great feeling that recreational players can use to find this smooth pace.
“You go to the top of the backswing,” Tischler said. “And once you get there, you count to three. Then you just transition and swing, feeling like you’re staying on cruise control.”
Tischler emphasized that while it is important to accelerate through the ball, keeping that thought in mind when swinging can lead to poor transition and sequence.
“We don’t want to feel like we’re accelerating the ball too much,” Tischler said. “You always hear that, but that’s mainly so you don’t slow down.”
Instead of feeling like you’re rushing everything from the top, try taking a short break to collect yourself and then begin the transition. By doing that a few times during practice, you will get the hang of cruise control early and you will have a much better pace and ball striking.
