Serhiy Sidey is facing a frustrating bump in the road as a major setback in his UFC 322 preparations has forced him to withdraw from the card. The withdrawal from his bantamweight fight with Malcolm Wellmaker has cut that particular duo, but Nice junkie has reported that the promotion is looking for a replacement for the undefeated Wellmaker.
The Canadian fighter didn’t leave MMA fans scratching their heads as to why the withdrawal happened, and Sidey took to his social media to clear up a few things. Sidey told his Instagram followers that he is no longer part of the follow-up match at Madison Square Garden:
“It’s heartbreaking to write this but unfortunately I have to pull out of my fight on November 15th for UFC 322 due to a brutal shoulder dislocation during training. I apologize to my opponent @wallathemachine and I hope you get the chance to fight on the card. I was very excited for this opportunity but I think it just wasn’t meant to be this time. I will do everything I can to heal quickly and get back as soon as possible are. I want to thank everyone for the love and support.”
Serhiy Sidey’s path so far in mixed martial arts
Serhiy Sidey cut his teeth on the regional MMA circuits in Canada, and after collecting titles with organizations like BTC Fight Promotions and Battlefield Fight League, the 29-year-old was given a shot on Dana White’s Contender Series.
Sidey would secure a UFC contract on that platform with a first-round finish, albeit a somewhat controversial one, against Ramon Tavares. Tavares and Sidey would have an immediate rematch afterward, with the former evening the series against the latter. Tavares would emerge with a split-decision victory at UFC 297 in a hotly contested, competitive affair.
The Ontario native would bounce back from his UFC main stage debut defeat by coming out on the other side of a split-decision ruling. Sidey received the nod from two of the three judges against Garrett Armfield last November. It is also notable that Sidey is currently coming off back-to-back victories in the octagon, as he also scored a unanimous decision victory over Cameron Smotherman in May.
