That said, the two Manchester sides are believed to be at the forefront of the chase. As reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, Semenyo is said to be in favor of a move to the Etihad Stadium if he were to leave Bournemouth in the near future.
Although no agreement has yet been reached, a £65 million release clause, which remains valid until January 10, could help streamline negotiations.
If Semenyo remains at the Vitality Stadium beyond January, the value of his release clause is expected to drop significantly before the summer window.
Nevertheless, given the strong interest from elite Premier League teams – especially Manchester City – a mid-season transfer seems the most likely outcome at the moment.
Ornstein adds that Semenyo’s desire to compete for trophies has been a decisive factor in his preference for City.
Pep Guardiola’s side have secured six Premier League championships since 2018, with Liverpool the only team to have interrupted their dominance twice.
City also enjoyed European success in 2023, beating Inter Milan in the Champions League final and completing a historic treble in addition to their league and FA Cup victories.
Manchester United are also believed to be interested in Semenyo, although securing his signature in January was always going to prove difficult for Ruben Amorim’s side.
Liverpool and Tottenham have previously been linked with the forward, but neither club has appeared to increase their interest in recent weeks.
Chelsea unexpectedly entered the picture on Tuesday, amid reports of an initial contact with Semenyo’s representatives.
However, it later emerged that Chelsea decided not to pursue the 25-year-old and instead rely on their current attacking options.
Should City succeed in signing Semenyo, he would add further depth to Guardiola’s formidable forward line, which already includes Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, Omar Marmoush, Savinho, Oscar Bobb, Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki.
City are currently involved in an exciting title battle with Arsenal and are only two points behind the leaders after seventeen games. For now, their focus will be on the upcoming matches as the new year approaches.
They will travel to Nottingham Forest shortly after Christmas before taking on Sunderland in a demanding match on January 2.
