Scheifele, Morrissey and Connor combined to score eight points to carry the Jets to a 3-1 victory over the Blues
There were no changes to the Jets line combinations tonight as they stuck with the same lineups as last night. Gustav Nyquist was again on line 4 (instead of Cole Koepke) and Luke Schenn remained on the 2nd pairing with Dylan Samberg. The Jets’ third duo tonight was Logan Stanley and Isaak Phillips, who was playing in his second game with the Jets.
Eric Comrie got the start in goal after a handful of games off, as Hellebuyck rested after a pretty strong performance despite last night’s loss. The Jets lineup is still mostly healthy and injury-free, except for Haydn Fleury, Neal Pionk and Colin Miller. Elias Salomonsson is absent due to an illness. Comrie came into tonight’s game with a 7-9-1 record, a 3.33 GAA and a below-average .884 SV%. Tonight’s game started off evenly before the Jets jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first inning. The Jets never lost their lead and held on for a closely contested victory.
1st Period
Tonight’s match started fairly evenly, with both teams having a few chances on goal. Both teams remained disciplined until Nathan Walker was called for a four-minute double minor on the high-flying Isaak Phillips.
The Jets best power play unit went to work and they scored not one, but two goals on this man advantage, starting the game a perfect 2 on 2 on the power play. The first goal saw Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele set up in the Blues zone before finding Josh Morrissey on the point for a one-time shot past Joel Hofer.
Why not make it FLYYYY ✈️
Less than two minutes later, during the 2nd power play of this double minor, Mark Scheifele scored his 24th goal of the season. Josh Morrissey fired a shot at goal that went wide, but he got his own rebound. Morrissey found Scheifele low and he crept to the net before firing the puck over Hofer to make it 2-0 Jets.
You sneaky sneaky Mark 😮💨
The remainder of the opening period passed without any more goals as the Blues were unable to respond to the pair of power play goals. Jonathan Toews took a penalty kick with 32 seconds left in the period, giving the Blues a chance to reset and open the second period on a shortened power play. Shots on goal after 20 minutes of play were only 6-6.
2nd Period
The second period started with the Jets on the penalty kill, but they shut down the Blues, who didn’t create many scoring opportunities. Both teams continued to try to generate more shots on target, but halfway through this match the shots on target were only 11.
Everything continued to go well for the Jets for the next stretch of play as they did well to maintain their two-goal lead. With less than 4 minutes left in the 2nd, Vladislav Namestnikov took a 4-minute double minor for the high-firing Jonatan Berggren. The Blues made sure they could take advantage of this power play early. Dalibor Dvorsky sent the puck back to Justin Faulk, who looked and found Jordan Kyrou for a one-time hit that flew past Comrie and into the net.
Just as the Jets did earlier on their four-minute power play, the Blues scored in the first two minutes, meaning they still had a power play to go. The Jets regrouped and shut down the Blues for the remainder of the second period, holding a 2–1 lead. The Blues would get a very short power play to start the third, and the Blues now outscored the Jets 17-14 after 40 minutes of play as they continued to push back in this match.
3rd Period
The third period started with the Jets killing a very short Blues power play. Two minutes later, Dvorsky was called for pinning Jonathan Toews, giving the Jets a power play opportunity of their own. The Jets didn’t get much use out of this opportunity, and two minutes after the penalty expired, the Blues went back to the power play. Dylan DeMelo had his third blocked shot of the night and Comrie made a pair of saves to keep the game at 2-1 with 10 minutes left.
The Blues continued to push for the equalizer and now defeated the Jets 22-15. There would be no more penalties in this match as both teams continued to push for the next important goal. That next goal wouldn’t happen until the Blues pulled their goalkeeper with about 3 minutes left. After collecting the puck in the Jets zone, Morrissey sent a strong pass to Kyle Connor, who then made a nice pass off the boards to Scheifele who raced down the ice. Scheifele grabbed the puck and tapped it into the empty net for his 25th goal of the season.
Now with a late two-goal lead, the Jets went into ‘protect’ mode as the Blues made their final push with the net empty again. Comrie made a few more saves and the Jets held on for a 3-1 win Tuesday night. Comrie made 22 saves as the Blues outscored the Jets 6-2 in the final period and 23-16 overall. Morrissey had 1 goal and 2 assists, Mark Scheifele had 2 goals and 1 assist, and Kyle Connor had 2 assists as the Jets star players came to play in this mostly defensive battle.
