The China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has been roped in by the federal government to construct the Sarawak-Sabah highway with an allocated budget of RM7.4 billion. The sun has reported.

The Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development had today announced that its minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, held a meeting with the senior leadership of the CCCC in Chengdu, China on October 27.

The ministry stated that the delegation acquired crucial knowledge regarding CCCC’s environmentally sustainable approach to tunneling mountain and hilly terrain, which was applied in the development of mountain highways through remote areas in China.

“These construction methods align perfectly with our highway development strategy in the Sarawak-Sabah corridor, which will establish land routes through challenging geographical features in Baram, Bario and Lawas for the highway, as well as Sebuyau in southern Sarawak, where a complementary road initiative is planned,” the ministry said.

According to the report, Lawa MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong stated that Putrajaya has approved these major infrastructure projects.

“The Sarawak-Sabah Highway, which bypasses Brunei, will enable travelers from other parts of Sarawak to reach Lawas and continue to Sabah through uninterrupted highway infrastructure. These developments will collectively drive long-term growth for the Sarawak-Sabah region,” he said.

An allocation of RM48 billion was announced for highways and road infrastructure in Sabah and Sarawak when the 2026 Budget was tabled. In 2026, RM1.67 billion has been allocated to Pan Borneo Sabah for the project to be implemented on schedule.
