SanDisk’s ultra-small USB flash drive is built to stay connected

SanDisk takes “the world’s smallest” USB flash drive and gives it a USB-C connector, and… that’s it. In fact, it’s so small that this “removable” drive doesn’t need to be removed, the company said.

Officially, SanDisk will launch the drive next Tuesday, and a representative who appeared at the 2025 Pepcom Holiday Spectacular did not identify the model name. The company previously introduced what it called the world’s smallest USB flash drive at CES 2018, called the Ultra Fit. At that show it came with a USB-A connector, but a prototype USB-C device was also shown.

Either way, the new USB drive sits perpendicular to the connector, unlike other USB flash drives of the past. It will be shipped with SanDisk’s Memory Zone backup software.

On the other hand, the squat, almost flat shape means that SanDisk doesn’t really think users will actually remove the removable drive. “It doesn’t interrupt your daily lifestyle while you’re on the road,” said a representative named Allison.

SanDisk shows off two examples of its new USB flash drive, one handheld and one in the USB-C slot.

“It’s a really good drive that you plug in and stays put and then stays with you so you never have to take it out,” Allison said.

Most USB flash drives are large enough that this won’t happen. If you leave a drive in, you run the risk of it being broken off by your bag, backpack, or handbag. Apparently SanDisk feels like those days are over.

Thanks to the USB-C connector, the new USB flash drive can be used in both laptops and smartphones, as the two devices now share common USB-C interfaces. Still, the USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface translates to an I/O speed of just 5 Gbps, which is slower than the normal 10 Gbps interface on most laptops.

The new SanDisk drive will range from 64 GB for $14.99 to 1 terabyte for $109.99, and will be available from Amazon on November 4.
