The $ 16.5 billion deal from Samsung Electronics to produce the next generation AI6 processors from Tesla has won new weight after Tesla has closed its Dojo Supercomputing team, a movement that is generally seen as a sign that the electric car manufacturer will lean more on external chip partners. The development, reports the Korea Herald, is a possible deepening of ties between the South Korean tech giant and the American car maker.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed last week that the company will now concentrate on the development of its AI5 and AI6 chips, adapted processors built for self-driving technology and AI-Workloads, instead of splitting sources on different designs. “It is not logical for Tesla to distribute his sources and scale two very different AI chip designs,” Musk wrote on X and added: “The Tesla AI5, AI6 and next chips will be excellent for inference and at least pretty good for training. All efforts are focused on that.”
Dojo, launched in 2021 with Tesla’s custom D1 chip, was intended to provide power to the operating machine of the company, full self-driving systems and Optimus Humanoid Robot. But Bloomberg reported that Musk ordered the team to dissolve dissolution and to allocate engineers to other projects, including data centers. The shift will increase the dependence on Tesla of partners such as Nvidia, AMD and Samsung Electronics, the report noted.
In July, Samsung announced a record of $ 16.5 billion contract to produce the AI6 chips from Tesla until 2033 in the factory in Taylor, Texas. Musk called the announced figure ‘only the absolute minimum’, and hinted that the final value could be higher. He also revealed that he held a video call with Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Jae-Yong “to proceed with what a real partnership would look like.”
Lee, who has been with business leaders in the US since the meeting of 29 July, is now in the center of speculation about a possible meeting with Tesla’s top managers.
“In the past, the foundries only shared processes and production, but they are now evolving to also share design,” said an industrial officer. “Samsung has long had existing possibilities in design, so there are many areas where it could collaborate with Tesla.”
