It is Friday evening in the Ryder Cup, which means that we are eight games in this three-day, 28-match Extravaganza. Europe opened a 5.5 to 2.5 lead on day 1, which means that we put together our writer round table to ask: who gets credit?!
1. One day in, who is the hero of this Ryder Cup? Here is the catch: no repeat names.
Sean Zak, senior writer (@Sean_zak): It is the quiet front, which nobody is talking about: Jon Rahm. People forget that Rahm lost the first two games of his Ryder Cup career, far back in Paris in 2018. He has been 8-1-3 since, with his only defeat against Scottie Scheffler at Whistling Straits Singles. He is now opposed to Scheffler in the last three cups and has a winning record against … the best player since Tiger Woods? Rahm did not get the love he earned in Rome, and I fear that he might not get it anymore.
James Colgan, News and Features Editor (@Jamescolgan26): I was not surprised by Rory McIlroy’s Ryder Cup Brilliance on Friday. I was also not surprised by Jon Rahm’s. But I’m not sure if I explain Tommy Fleetwood well. He plays the best wave of his life, and I am not sure if I have ever seen him play better in every environment than in his 36 holes on Friday, covered with a hug-to-3-foot approach on the 18th.
Dylan Dethier, senior writer (@dylan_dethier): It is Rory McIlroy. His team combines when the rest of his team combines. Rory has been open about how much this event means to him. Now he delivers.
Alan Bastable, Executive Editor (@alan_bastable): Luke Donald certainly deserves a nod. He was a (multiple?) Step the Americans in Rome, and it seems that he is here again on Long Island. I don’t know if he is rising to the status of the “hero”, but also supports Cameron Young, who apparently chopped out of the form of Justin Thomas and Aberg and Hojgaard in the afternoon. You wonder if Young – with his roots in New York and all his Bethpage experience – should play twice today.
Looking ahead to future Ryder Cup locations
2. And one day in, who is the biggest guy of this Ryder Cup? Again, no repetitions.
Chalice: Uh, it’s Scottie Scheffler. The best player on either side went on Friday with 0-2-0 and continued a series of surprisingly bad game in team matches. At one point he had left 18 straight holes of competition game without a single bird. On this golf course? In these circumstances? Forget to borrow from the local language! Two weeks ago, Scheffler finished a line of twenty -one rounds below par. The Americans need much more from their number 1 if they start to have a chance at the weekend. (Although I will admit that I was encouraged by Back-to-Back Birdies to close things!)
Bag: James is right, but no repetitions! So I take his morning teammate, Russell Henley, who is perhaps a Ryder Cup vegetable, but the number 3 player in the world. He has been one of the six best golfers in the world for the past 12 months. And he was shaken by the stage. He shrinked and did not give Scheffler much to work with. The American horses must be horses. They are not now.
DESTHIER: Bethpage Black as a match play golf course was a bit of a guy. I don’t know, man – there was just zero fire at this place. It was wet that is clearly outside the control of tournament organizers. But I didn’t feel that players had much to do with risks. The rough is cut so short and the greens are so soft that there is very little punishment for a miss, which meant that there was a lot of arrowing and then a number of matches were placed in the placement of competitions. The Europeans made almost zero bogeys in foursomes! Credit to them. I just longed for something more fascinating.
Fundamentally: The first Tee experience. Don’t get me wrong, the colossal stands were packed and lively on Friday morning, but the horizontal structure – which extends from the back of the 18th Green all the way to the first tee – lacks a certain intimacy and coherence. When it came to singing and party joy, half of the stands did not seem to know what the other half did. I missed the Colosseum atmosphere that was made by wrapping stands that we have seen at Past Ryder Cups.
3. You are suddenly called in the chamber of the captain. What do you tell Keegan Bradley and American leadership?
Bag: I tell Keegan that it is ok for players not to play three games. Everyone got wet on Friday. They don’t have to play on Saturday. Xander Schauffele should not be sitting. Harris English does not have to go back on Saturday. You are now in the dog mode of the Junkyard. Every half point is important.
Chalice: I will be a little more specific: I tell Keegan that Collin Morikawa and Harris English can sit until you look at a more competitive tournament. Those boys were completely surpassed on Friday.
DESTHIER: Don’t even think after a second, Cameron Young, another session. Also check the articles of association to see if the captain can submit himself.
Fundamentally: Don’t know. We are the world because we are the world because we are the world because we have the world because we are the world.
4. Tell me an interesting thing that you saw or heard on the course on Friday.
Bag: A few sports psychs for the American team will look the boys on Saturday morning and then fly to Athens for the Alabama-Georgia match, because they both also work with those football teams. Then they fly back to Long Island on Saturday evening to prepare the boys for Sunday singles. That is a Helluva weekend.
Chalice: I witnessed the most modest Bryson Dechbeau that I saw in a large golf environment in two years! Of course he was still Bryson, but I was surprised to see how little time he spent playing in the crowd. I think we should see more of the showman if we hope that this thing is close by on Sunday.
DESTHIER: Rory was by far the most sadness of every player – fans sang “F— You, Rory!” Pre-7 am-but towards the end of the afternoon, it seemed to be able to draw strength. We can study strokes that have been won after Vogel-Flip, but he did not miss a shot.
Fundamentally: The military sniper in the stands behind 18 Green dropped my jaw. The Sharpshooter was part of the Trump security team, but still, when he was standing above it with a gun on a tripod was not something I expected to see so close to the action.
