Rory Mcilroy crumbled to the ground on the 18th Green at Augusta National and let it all out – 14 years of emotion and pain came out. The green jacket and the Grand Slam career were finally his. But McIlroy later admitted that he was not prepared for the Come Down after achieving something he had spent his entire life.
“Look, you dream about the last putt that goes to the Masters, but you don’t think about what’s coming next,” said McIlroy prior to the 2025 US Open in Oakmont. “I have always been a player who is struggling to play after a big event, after I have won the tournament. I always have trouble appearing with motivation the following week because you have just achieved something, and you want to enjoy it, and you want to enjoy the fact that you relax a bit.
“I think it is trying to have a little memory loss and to forget what happened six weeks ago,” said McIlroy that same day. “I just try to find the motivation to go back and work as hard as I have worked. I worked incredibly hard on my game from October last year until April of this year. It was nice to see the fruits of my work come to a pronunciation and everything to enjoy.
The post-masters malaise was understandable. Post-success melancholy is of course for every person. People, especially top athletes, are not wired to find fulfillment in one performance. The feeling is fleeting; The only thing that remains is a void and a search for the next goal. People are naturally constant seekers and confusators are always based on the following. Achieving a lifelong goal often raises the existential question about finding true fulfillment if there is always something else to chase. David Duval discovered that after his open Championship victory of 2001. Kevin Durant did not find what he thought he would do after winning an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors. After Lydia Ko won the Olympic gold medal last summer to get to the LPGA Hall of Fame, she was faced with a similar malaise.
“I think I thought my life or perhaps the way I thought about myself would change when I came to the Hall of Fame and did a lot of the things I wanted to do before it actually happened, and I am sure that Rory thinks the same thing in comparable parts, where everyone was, the masters is the one he missed.
“I think that is where I got into peace a bit. I sometimes think when it is there for you and see all these statistics, you feel that you have to do more. I think some things we have already received, we naturally consider that I realized the most, and that is what realizes that I still go outside and play every week.”
Why the 2025 Ryder Cup starts earlier than you think it is doing

Playing McIlroy’s post-masters was largely flat. But he found a new “Everest” while trying to win the Open Championship for his home crowd at Royal Portush in Noord -Irland. He was short and ended in a draw for the seventh, but filled his soul while giving the Portrush hope with a weekend tax.
“I have everything I wanted from this week except get a Claretkan,” he said after he ended his last round.
McIlroy’s search for motivation, for his next mountain, will be underway, always changing. While the masters was a fixed target, the next phase of his professional career will record a shooting star. The open is not planned at the moment to return to Royal Portrush, although that could change at some point. McIlroy noted that his goals now include winning major tournaments in iconic locations, namely the US Open on Pebble Beach and the Open in St. Andrews, and he already told us which North Stars he intends to chase while his hair remains gray.
“Winning the Masters, winning an Olympic medal and another way Ryder Cup, they are my three goals for the rest of my career,” McIlroy BBC Sport told In January.
He checked the biggest box in April when he fought and defeated his demons to finally become a champion at Augusta National. After months of enjoying a dream that has been achieved and looking for something to chase, something to reach, McIlroy has again a clear target with the 2025 Ryder Cup in Bethpage Black now only three weeks away.
“When I look at my career and my whole photo like a golfer, I actually did everything I wanted,” said McIlroy open in the K Club on Wednesday. “I think that everything is a bonus after that, but you have to re -assess your goals. The only thing for me this year to re -assess my goals, a road Ryder Cup, after everything that happened this year would be – I would look back on 2025, and there would be no way to have a better year, 2025 I would have it this year. I would do it to go.”
After the victory of Europe in Rome in the Ryder Cup 2023, McIlroy promised that Europe would beat Bethpage Americans and the first team since the Europeans of 2012 would be to win a Ryder Cup road. The American captain Keegan Bradley said he has shown that clip to various members of his team. They are aware of McIlroy’s comments from two years ago, but the newly beaten Grand Slam champion still feels Bullish about Europe’s chances of Long Island.
“To be honest, since it opened, it is the only thing I really searched for and to ensure that my game is in the best possible form,” said McIlroy about the Ryder Cup. “I think we have a great opportunity to do something – to be honest, one of the biggest achievements in the game is currently to win a Ryder Cup road, and I think this European team has a great opportunity to do that.
“I am enthusiastic about the chance. I am also enthusiastic about the challenge,” said McIlroy. “We know that it will be a very challenging environment to play in, but that is what we want. The best players want to challenge themselves, and that is what it will be.”
Rory Mcilroy was looking for motivation. He found something that he had missed in the open air, and now one of his career goals – a shooting star – is about to come into view.
