Keegan Bradley is not going to play down. The decision with which he stands in Frisco, Texas on Wednesday morning? It is the “biggest decision” of his life.
“I’m ready,” Bradley said Last week’s tour championship. “I know this is the biggest decision of my life.”
And which decision is that exactly? Well, only the biggest decision of the year in Golf – the six players selected in the American team as Ryder Cup ‘Captain’s Selections’. Bradley will take his decision officer on Wednesday morning in a ceremony at the headquarters of PGA or America at 11 am Est, which concludes a “two -year process” that has seen the number of eligible players decrease from a few dozen to just a handful.
Still, as with every Ryder Cup, only 12 players can make the team, and many more than 12 players are worth it.
So how is the decision made? And what is it all about? We break it down below.
Ryder Cup Captain selections
Like most other things in Golf, the Ryder Cup selection process exists on the intersection of some complicated mathematics and some particularly confusing rules. Fortunately, the underlying process is actually fairly simple, as long as you understand what you are looking at.
The first six players in each team are what we call ‘automatic qualifications’. This group was selected on the basis of points that are built over a period of two years, starting after the previous Ryder Cup. Points are roughly correlated with the income, so paying attention to the Ryder Cup rankings is not that hard to understand. If you play well, you earn more money and if you earn more money, you earn more Ryder Cup points. (The only major reservation here: LIV events are not included on the Ryder Cup point list, which means that some players of the rival Tour are under -represented in the ranking in relation to their game.)
The remaining six schedules in both teams are decided via “Selections of the captain”Those in essence Wildcard -Picks were made by the captain of both Ryder Cup team (in 2025 those two Captains Keegan Bradley are for the Americans, and Luke Donald for the Europeans).
In theory, the selection of a captain can be everyone. When Keegan Bradley thought that Tiger Woods was a worthy player on the American side, he could select Woods to play in the team despite Tiger Ranking as the 148th American in the points race. As Donald thought that players were worth a lock in the team six to 12 on the point list, he could also select those six players. The only rule is that Bradley and Donald are those who make the decision.
What about why? The points system and the picks of the captain are made to help the process of placing the 12 best players in each schedule. The first six car qualifications ensure that everyone has equal opportunities to make the team, and nobody who earns a place for the team is omitted because of a ‘boys’ club’. The selections of the lower six leader ensure that players missing the time due to injury, or those who are valuable to the Ryder Cup selection in ways that do not necessarily dictate recent form, do not lag behind the schedule.
What you need to know about the selections of the Ryder Cup Cup captain 2025
The main story line is this year in the center of Ryder Cup of this year: American captain Keegan Bradley, whose tortured history at the event took on a new shadow in 2025 in 2025. After a year of surprisingly great game, Bradley faces an unusual debate: whether they should choose whether they should choose or choose if they should choose itself For the schedule as the first play captain in 50 years, or to choose someone else who might earn a place in the team. Bradley has seriously considered all parties of the case, but it is not clear what way he leans with less than 24 hours. In a Sisyphean turning, his scheduling candidature is the most difficult to walk out.
On the European side, it is possible that 11 of the 12 of the team players could return from a 2023 campaign in Rome. With the ballot papers to be added, there are no certainties and Donald could choose to add a heavily charging dose of new blood to the team like Harry Hall. But for now it is possible that the only change in the schedule can be Nicolai Hojgaard for his twin brother, Rasmus. Donald will make his announcement on Monday at 9 am.
