If the history of Ryder Cup has taught us something in the last decade, it is that the Americans, after they have been trounded on Friday in the morning fours, may be in trouble.
The Europeans ran to a 3-1 lead on the 2025 Ryder Cup on Bethpage Black on Long Island on Friday and all three of their games won convincingly (and almost the last to steal).
In the past five Ryder Cups, the team that won Foursomes won the Ryder Cup on Friday. Will that trend continue? We will discover it in two days.
Europe trounces us in Ryder Cup Foursomes Friday
Bryson Deschambeau hinted to his plan to control the green at the par-4 opening hole on the Black Course, and Deschambeau almost did it and later rolled in the putt for Birdie, giving Justin Thomas and Deschambeau an early 1-up lead in the first game.
It was a great start for the US, but from there things went downhill.
Deschambeau and Thomas did not win another hole all morning. Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, in four group consisting of three LIV golf members, won back-to-back holes on 7 and 8 and again at 12 and 13.
Even on the par-3 14th, when Thomas brought it close and Deschambeau rolled into the Birdie Putt, Rahm match him to keep the lead 3 up. They closed it later and won 4 and 3, when Thomas missed a short par putt.
Behind them it was a lot of blue on the rankings.
Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick won 5 and 3 above world no. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley, and Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood won 5 and 4 above Collin Morikawa and Harris English. Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay have collected the only victory for the US
Both combinations of Aberg and Fitzpatrick and McIlroy and Fleetwood made three straight birdies on nrs. 4-6 to build large leads early. Aberg and Fitzpatrick were specifically seven under 14 holes.
A few minutes after Europe’s first point, McIlroy and Fleetwood put a bow on their dominant victory. And about 15 minutes later it was 3-0, because Fitzpatrick and Aberg won their match on the 15th Green.
Behind them, in a competition the Americans had once led 3, the US suddenly hung on to try to secure a precious point.
Viktor HOVOLAND made 10-legs for Birdie to win both 10 and 11, and the American lead was only 1 up. Suddenly the Americans tried to avoid a historical session sweep, something the road team had not done since 1987 (although Europe led 4-0 after the opening session on the way to his dominant victory two years ago).
They tied 14, and at 15, HOVOLAND made another coupling potting, making them a short par -rescue to win the hole after Cantlay missed his, evening the game with three holes to play.
After a draw at 16, the Americans won 17 with a par after Robert Macintyre hit his tee shot in the bunker and could not convert the par putt. The US made for its only point by winning the 18th and recording the match 2.
