In a recent appearance on ESPN’s NBA Today, NBA insider Shams Charania was asked about the state of play for veteran guard Russell Westbrook. Charania said Westbrook and the Sacramento Kings share a mutual interest in potentially working together for this season.
“Look, I’m told there is strong mutual interest between Russell Westbrook and the Sacramento Kings. And the Kings are in need of a backup point guard. Last season they were 29th in bench points and 29th in bench assists,” Charania said. “Russell Westbrook helps with that, and he has relationships throughout the organization: Domantas Sabonis, who he’s close with, played with him. He also played with Dennis Schroeder, DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine. They also have ties to LA. BJ Armstrong, the new assistant general manager there. He knows BJ Armstrong from the agency side, and he has respect for Scott Perry, their new general manager, and Doug Christie, their new head coach. We’ll see if a deal can be completed before the start of the season or next year.”
Westbrook is out of contract this season after opting out of his player option with the Denver Nuggets. Last season, the veteran point guard averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.4 steals in 27.9 minutes per game, mostly off the Nuggets bench.
