You know it’s that time of year when seemingly baseless trade rumors surface about players and teams that have never been mentioned together before.
So it was no surprise that the Phoenix Suns were rumored to be a potential landing spot for star big man Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings as they lurch from one disaster to another.
Suns would repeat Kevin Durant’s big mistake with Sabonis.
Surely the only reason the Suns are mentioned as possible suitors is because they are no longer above the platform and have a history of making splashy moves under owner Mat Ishbia?
But anyone who has watched this team, and just as importantly their front office, since Durant was traded to Houston knows their approach has changed.
Ishbia has spoken about building a roster slowly and without cuts, and while it’s just a start, he’s been true to his word.
The Suns and Wizards have been mentioned as potential suitors for Domantas Sabonis, in addition to the Bulls, per @sam_amick.
If Phoenix were to pursue Sabonis, a trade package would likely revolve around Jalen Green and Mark Williams. Washington could offer a tapering salary,… https://t.co/8hC9CXBZi4

Then there’s General Manager Brian Gregory, who can already take a victory lap because he was expected to fail miserably, and who has taken smart steps to improve the team so far.
The deal that carried the most risk, but also paid off big time, was the signing of center Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets. A transaction that the Los Angeles Lakers still regret not pursuing.
Williams is currently eligible for an extension and is set to have a career year in The Valley, so why exactly would they want Sabonis? When Jusuf Nurkic was manning the paint this would have been a no-brainer, but times have changed in Phoenix.
Any trade for Sabonis would likely have to include both Williams and Jalen Green, and not only is that too much to give up at this point; Sabonis currently has a partially torn meniscus, we haven’t even seen this Suns roster fully healthy.
Green has played in two games, while Williams has proven he can stay on the pitch and has already made a huge difference.
Head coach Jordan Ott deserves so much credit for using guys like Williams and Dillon Brooks to create a defensive mentality, and he could certainly get the best out of Sabonis on that front as well.
But the prospect of wiping out another group when it hasn’t even had a chance to show us what it can be for a 29-year-old with a lot of miles under his belt would be a disaster.
The Suns are used here because they are retooling and there are no picks on the way either. Given their history, going after Sabonis is also an obvious choice.
Only if you pay attention to what’s happening in Phoenix will you know that they have no interest in Sabonis and are building the roster in a way that Ishbia and company have never attempted before.
