Head coach of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, pointed out a big problem that he saw when his match rode a 3-2 victory over Burnley on Saturday.
United Secure First victory of the season
United went into the back of a humiliating defeat of the middle of the week in the hands of Grimsby Town in the second round of the EFL Cup.
The pressure is mounted on Amorim and the match against Burnley was just a must-win.
Josh Cullen’s own goal gave the Red Devils a deserved lead in the first half, but Lyle Foster made only 10 minutes after the interval for Burnley.
Bryan Mbeumo almost immediately returned to United, with the Camerooner pulling a Diogo Dalot cross home. But United could not sustain and Burnley pulled the level again thanks to Jaidon Anthony.
It seemed that the two parties should settle for part of the points, but Amad won a fine for United in StopTip Time. Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the Spot kick and converted to unite their first victory of the 2025/26 campaign.
Amorim’s comments after the game
Speaking with Premier League productions after the last whistle, Amorim claimed that United could have completed the match in the break, but felt that his players “convert” too complicated “things” from a fight.
He said [as quoted by BBC]”They are three points, if you look at the game, we have to solve it in the first half and control the game.”
“But we fight until the last moment because of things that we have too much complicated.”
“Look at the first half, we have so many opportunities to score. You feel that you can control the game. But one shot in it, one set broken. I shook my head because football is sometimes like that.”
“We now have two weeks with many opportunities. This was a game that we had to win, but we have a lot to do.”
Asked why he could not bring himself to view Fernandes’ penalty, Amorim replied: “I like to see the image of the fans. What should be. At that moment I thought, it would be honest to win the game.”
“And I didn’t think Bruno would miss a second in a row.”
Whether he thought of his future before the penalty, Amorim said, “No, I just thought Bruno would not miss.”
United is the following in action on September 14, when they are confronted with Manchester City in the Etihad.
