Two years ago, after the dominant victory of Europe in the United States at the Ryder Cup 2023 in Marco Simone, Rory McIlroy was confidently on stage and offered a prediction that has been shown throughout the golf world since his lips left in Italy.
“I probably said this to everyone who will listen to everyone or seven years old: I think one of the biggest performance in Golf is winning a road Ryder Cup at the moment, and that’s what we are going to do at Bethpage,” said McIlroy.
De Noord -Ier laid another marker at the start of this season when he outlined the remaining goals he wanted to achieve in his career: win the Masters, win an Olympic medal and won a Ryder Cup road.
McIlroy checked the first with a historic victory at Augusta National in April. An expected post-masters Malaise followed when McIlroy was looking for motivation to climb another mountain after he finally had his Everest. But McIlroy was again at the Open Championship on Royal Portush, and his victory at the Amgen Irish Open reminded us of what he has been saying for a while: when the events that are coming to him, he does not have to find the motivation.
While McIlroy once saw the Ryder Cup as nothing more than an exhibition, the biennial event was rooted in his golf soul because he has grown up and grew to understand the importance of the event. It is therefore no surprise that Paul McGinley, who will serve as a strategic adviser to the European Captain Luke Donald during next week’s Ryder Cup, saw a locked McIlroy during the recent team of the team to Bethpage Black.
“Rory enjoyed the last two and a half day,” said McGinley this week at a conference call. “He was at a height. Near the boys, having a crack, being a chat, being one of the boys. Being no Rory McIlroy, the Mega Superstar that everyone from his time drew. Nobody put it out of his time. You could see how much he liked in that area. Is to win a Ryder Cup.”
McIlroy has not withdrawn from his prediction that Europe will win at Bethpage Black. In a motivating video sent to Great Britain and the Walker Cup team of Ireland, McIlroy ended with a promise to bring the cup back to Europe after a three-day duel in ‘The People’s Country Club’.
“If someone who played a Walker Cup and couldn’t get it done completely, and then play Ryder Cups and beat the Yanks in their own backyard, nothing feels better,” McIlroy said in the message. “Please defeat them because I know we are going to beat them on Bethpage.”

McIlroy also came to the Pre-Goder Cup festivities when he picked Bryson Deschambeau into An interview with The Guardian’s Ewen Murray. Murray asked McIlroy about Dephambeau’s plan to ‘Tjirp’ when the two come across at Bethpage, which led to a negative response from the five -time big champion.
“I think that the only way he gets attention is to mention by other people. That is actually what I think of that. To get attention he will call me or scottie [Scheffler] or others, ‘Mcilroy told the Guardian.
This brings us back two years ago to McIlroy’s promise to beat the Americans in Bethpage Black. It is a clip that the American captain Keegan Bradley has shown to his team as a motivating tool. You could call it for the Americans, but it can eventually become a weapon for Europe by putting the best in McIlroy.
McGinley knows McIlroy well and has seen his star stand up for the past two decades. He knows that when Rory McIlroy really wants something, the best version of Rory Mcilroy usually arrives. Given everything McIlroy has said about the opportunities of Europe to win at Bethpage, McGinley believes that Europe will get that from McIlroy from Bethpage Black.
“The thing about Rory is, he has always been a fleeting artist,” said McGinley. “Rory’s success and Rory’s career has never been a straight line. You could look through it. There have been a lot of dips in his career. When he won large championships, he was baptized a bit. He had a lot of dips in his career, and then he comes back. Rory is dynamic.
What he has, what he has, what he has, what he has, what he has, what he has, what is in his face.
Regarding that proclamation at the end of the Ryder Cup 2023, McIlroy feels even better about it than then.
“I might be more confidence than I then,” McIlroy told Murray on the Tour Championship 2025 in East Lake. “It is clear that I said that in the euphoria of winning the Ryder Cup, but I think that with everything that has happened since then, Luke agrees to be the captain again, with the continuity of the team as it is, the form of the European this year, but especially leading to this event.
“If I compare it to the last two road Ryder Cups that I have played, I would say that we are in a much better place. I still believe that we are the underdogs, but feel more confident than in 2016 and 2021 that we can get it done.”
Rory McIlroy’s Post-Ryder Cup words may come back to bite him at Bethpage Black next week. Or maybe McIlroy will end his year as he started: by calling on the best of his game to add a new line to his CV -CV Van Hall of Fame while holding his Ryder Cup promise as part of his tradition.
Anyway, the words of McIlroy will tell the story of a victorious European upset or another home win for the Americans.
