Manchester United should be bold enough to remove Roberto De Zerbi’s name from their head coach search list.
De Zerbi, who impressed Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola during his time at Brighton, who even dared to call him uniquehas made it clear where he wants to coach next season and in the years to come.
United’s search for head coach
After Ruben Amorim was fired in early January, INEOS resisted the temptation to make a hasty decision on his permanent replacement.
Instead, the United hierarchy appointed Michael Carrick as acting head coach until the end of the season.
As Carrick works to improve United’s fortunes in the hope of earning the job permanently, deliberations continue behind the scenes over whether he should be given the role or recruit another tactician.
If not Carrick, De Zerbi is a coach United are reportedly keen to pursue.
The Italian tactician is highly regarded at Old Trafford. While INEOS may be considering him for the United position, it seems increasingly clear he is not interested.
The Zerbi clears the air
Speaking to the media on Friday ahead of Olympique de Marseille’s match against Paris FC, the 46-year-old reiterated his position on staying with the French team in the coming years:
“There is nothing to confirm,” De Zerbi said The Evening Standardwhen asked if he was close to leaving OM after Marseille’s Champions League elimination on Wednesday evening. “I was manager of Marseille, and I still am.”
He then made his intentions even clearer:
“I think I have the strength to stay at Marseille for six or seven seasons, that is not a question. What irritates me is the defeat. It is not a matter of passion, but of a feeling of powerlessness to lose like that.”
Based on these claims, it is almost certain that De Zerbi has ruled himself out of the race for the United job. He seems completely satisfied with his current role in Marseille.
De Zerbi was not the only top coach who looked up
For INEOS, that’s one name on their wish list as these shots further narrow and streamline the search for United’s next head coach.
Fortunately, there are other capable coaches firmly on their radar.
As well as Carrick’s chance to retain the role, Thomas Tuchel and Oliver Glasner have also been linked, keeping the shortlist strong.
