Robbie Fowler has given his opinion on why Liverpool are not defending as well as last season and he believes it could be due to the loss of one of the club’s key players.
Liverpool have the eighth-worst defense in the Premier League in terms of goals conceded this season, which is in stark contrast to Arne Slot’s first season at Anfield.
Only Arsenal had a better defensive record than the Reds last season, but lately it has been a very different story.
Liverpool only has +1 goal difference after eleven league matches, after finishing with +45 goal difference in May.
Ibrahima Konate has been criticized for his performances and the absence of Alisson Becker is clearly palpable. However, ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has suggested that Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid has been a cause of his old teams’ problems.
He told it Amazon Prime Video Sports“I think it’s obviously a disappointment for a lot of Liverpool fans the way Trent left. I don’t think anyone will deny that he’s an absolute superstar at this football club because of what he’s done and what he’s achieved.”
“He is an exceptional player for Liverpool, he is still an exceptional player and maybe the fact that Liverpool are not as solid defensively as they were. Maybe that could play a role in that. Trent is not there.”
Alexander-Arnold was a fan favorite when he played for Liverpool, but this was largely down to his versatility and the attacking threat he posed from full-back, rather than his defence.
Despite this, Fowler has wondered whether the player’s critics were wrong to target his defense given the way things have fallen apart at Liverpool.
“But maybe he was better defensively than we all give him credit for, but he’s a great player,” Fowler continued.
Alexander-Arnold made just two starts in La Liga for Real Madrid, although he came off the bench three more times. He didn’t keep a clean sheet in any of the games he started.
