Ricky Ponting gives reason why Australia will make the top 4
Speaking about the ICC review, Ponting expressed confidence in Australia’s chances, highlighting the overall balance of the squad. He pointed out that while India Australia may start as favorites due to circumstances and talent, but Australia are well equipped to challenge any team in the tournament. According to Ponting, flexibility is the greatest strength of the Australian unit, especially the abundance of quality all-rounders.
“If you look at the squad, I think they have as good a chance as anyone. India probably start as clear favorites in this event, I think, because of the conditions, the talent and the group of players they have put together. They will be tough to beat, but I really think we will see Australia there in the semi-finals.” Ponting said.
He emphasized the presence of players like Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell And Cameron Greenall of which offer multiple options with both bat and ball. Ponting also selected a young all-rounder Cooper Connollywho has achieved a remarkable performance in the Big Bash League and won the MVP award for the second year in a row. Ponting noted that if the Heights offer help to spinners, Australia can easily include Connolly to support Maxwell and Adam Zampagiving them three real spin options without weakening their batting depth. This adaptability, he believes, could be a decisive factor in a long and demanding tournament.
“The one thing they have in that squad is good flexibility with so many all-rounders. Look at (Marcus) Stoinis, (Glenn) Maxwell, Cameron Green, there are so many. Cooper Connolly. Young guy who has just won the MVP again for the second year in a row in the BBL (Big Bash League). If things look like things will turn around, I think Australia will go with Connolly to support Maxwell and (Adam) Zampa. So, they have three there spin bowling options,’ Ponting added.
Major match experience is essential in ICC tournaments
Ponting also touched on the unique challenges of ICC events, describing them as extremely difficult to win due to the quality of opposition and pressure situations. He admitted that Australia fell short in the previous edition as their senior players failed to perform at crucial times. In tournaments like the T20 World Cup, timing is everything, and success often depends on star players finding form at the same time. Ponting believes this lesson has been well learned, and Australia will be keen to ensure their match-winners shoot when it matters most in 2026.
“What I know about these ICC events is that they are hard to win because the best teams in the world play in them and if you want to win it you have to get all your good players playing well at the right time. That’s what Australia probably didn’t have last time. They just didn’t have their big guns firing at the right time to win an event,” Ponting further added.

Expectations are high despite the absence of Pat Cummins
However, Australia will go into the tournament without one of their biggest match winners. Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the 2026 T20 World Cup due to a persistent lumbar stress injury, leaving a significant leadership and bowling void. Under the captaincy of Mitchell MarshAustralia is expected to miss Cummins’ calm presence and temperament.
Despite that setback, the rest of the team looks good and is packed with experience. With strong attacking speed, versatile all-rounders and proven players in pressure games, expectations remain high.
