A recent study has confirmed that several teams and players were involved in match fixing in the latest edition Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The findings have raised serious questions about the integrity and board of the competition.
A report from Prothom ALO showed that the BPL committee has identified unusual events in the previous season. These incidents varied from suspicious batting and bowling patterns. The probe marked 10-12 cricketers, including two current internationals in Bangladesh, a Pacer and an off-spinner. Various domestic players were also deliberately demonstrated and the questionable balls to manipulate match results.
The research categorized players categorized according to the evidence against them. Three to four players were marked as ‘highly marked’, with strong evidence that connected them directly with corrupt practices. Others were classified as ‘medium’ or ‘low marked’, which means that there was some suspicion, although not enough to convincingly close guilt. It is remarkable that an accused player was part of the recent Sri Lanka Tour team of Bangladesh, which was concerned about possible risks for the national team.
Most of the cricketers involved are older than 35, making it unlikely that they will return to international cricket. Nevertheless, the allegations have cast a long shade over their career. The list also contained a member of the subcommittee of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), who turned out to have facilitated deals with franchises involved in fixing. Civil servants of Durbar Rajshahi, Sylhet Strikers and Dhaka Capitals gave their role in manipulating competitions.
The research is expected to recommend that all accused players, team officers and managers from cricket will continue to be blocked until they can prove their innocence. The probe also extended to temporary employment partners, with some TV channels that are said to express gambling-related advertisements, reportedly earned 170-180 Crore Taka illegal from such promotions. These revelations have created an important controversy in the cricket of Bangladesh, which means that the League administration comes into the spotlight and the measures needed to restore the trust of the public.
