Lamine Yamal has suffered from persistent groin pain in recent weeks, which has prevented him from performing at his best in recent matches, including last Sunday’s El Clasico. Now that the discomfort still persists, FC Barcelona and the 18-year-old star have reportedly made a final decision on surgery to address the injury.

According to Sports newspaper, Lamine Yamal has decided not to undergo surgery to treat his pubalgia at this stage. Although the star still does not feel 100% fit, the young forward prefers to take a more conservative approach and monitor the progression of the injury before making any further decisions.

That said, the option of surgery is not completely excluded: If the pain persists, the option can be reconsidered later. While the specific treatment plan remains unclear, the decision to proceed with surgery is off the table, at least for the next few days.

Yamal’s injury has significantly affected his performance

Yamal’s pubic injury first became public during Spain’s international break in September, when reports claimed he was given painkilling injections to play against Bulgaria and Turkey. The situation caused concern and frustration among Barcelona’s medical staff, while the pain led to Yamal missing several matches. The injury has since become a growing problem that continues to limit his explosiveness on the field.

Because of the pain in the groin, Yamal missed four games in La Liga (against Valencia, Getafe, Real Oviedo and Sevilla) as well as Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League opener against Newcastle United. Although Barça managed to win most of those matches, their 4-1 defeat to Sevilla highlighted the team’s inconsistency without their teenage sensation.

So far in the 2025-2026 season Yamal scored three goals and five assists in eight appearancesimpressive numbers for a player whose primary role is to be more of a playmaker than a finisher. Still, the groin problem was evident during El ClĂ¡sico, where he performed a shadow of the player who finished second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or election.

Lionel Messi suffered a similar pubalgia problem during his time at Barcelona in 2016which left him sidelined for several games, but did not require surgery. Barcelona’s upcoming schedule includes a La Liga clash with Elche on Sunday, followed by a UEFA Champions League match against Club Brugge on Wednesday, November 5, with Yamal expected to start in both, with the club keeping a close eye on his physical condition.
