Rens/Buholz to final 60 singles & Wachob/Kimball to final 80s in Palm Beach Gardens on a beautiful winter day

Here are the draws (open only to those who have USTA membership).

Today was calmer and warmer (temperatures expected to reach the mid-70s today) and the sky was blue, unbroken by clouds.

The tournament had only six courts available until after noon (there are twenty courts at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center, but twelve were used for league play), so the 1970s semifinals and quarterfinals took place at 9 a.m. and the 1980s semifinals followed.

Vicki Buholz beat Anna Zimmermann 2.3, but they had a lot of good points… and Jenny Rens took out Ellen Markowitz 3.3… great points using the whole court and lots of drop shots, volleys and lobs.

In the 1970s, all quarters were won in straight sets. Una Davis, (6) upset Leslie Murveit (4) 62 63. Pat Purcell won a second set tiebreak, beating #8 Kathy Foulk by 2.6, Bunnie Jackson defeated Andrea Barnes and I defeated Tina Karwasky.

Bunnie and I beat Barnes/Murveit by 2.4 and came from 1-4 down to win the second set. In the final we face Pat Purcell/Betsy Savitt…they beat Karwasky/Foulk by 1.5.

In 60 doubles, Markowitz/Sylvia Kodsi upset #2 seed Kristen Charlton/Sue Kaleel (06 63 62) to reach the final against Rens/Buholz (who dispatched Mariana Hollman/Stacey Williams without dropping a match).

Sue Kimball (1) and Betty Wachob (2) advanced to the 80 singles final; Wachob had an easier time today than yesterday, beating unseeded Sharon Greene by 1.1 while Kimball defeated Brenda Carter by 2.4. The 80 doubles round robin ends tomorrow with the top finishers playing for gold and the 2nd place finishers for bronze.

Tomorrow I play Una Davis in the semifinals, while Jackson plays Purcell. Buholz will face Rens in the 60 singles final and Kimball will play Wachob in the 80 singles final.

Below, Terri Eggers and Heather Fiscalini just after playing a tough consolation match, won in the match tiebreaker by Fiscalini. Friends first…
