Sebastian Korda finds shape in his first tournament since Roland Garros. The American, who fought against a right Shin stress fracture this summer, has won two games in the Winston-Salem Open to reach the quarterfinals.
Despite the opening set on Wednesday, the 11th Seed Korda was on its way to a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 victory against Kamil Majchrzak van Poland.
“It was a roller coaster today, I just waited for my turn,” said 25-year-old Korda, no. 86 in the PIF ATP ranking. “He played some great tennis, so I just waited to see if his level dropped a bit. Fortunately I played a solid second game in the second set and I started playing much better.”
The American won 82 percent of his next points and saved all six breaking points with which he was confronted, according to Infosys ATP statistics. Korda will then meet the 13th seed Miomir Kecmanovic, with whom he is bound on 1-1 in their Lexus ATP Head2head series. Korda defeated the Serbian in the semi -final of this year’s Adelaide. Kecmanovic drove the third seed Luciano Darderi 6-3, 6-1 in 58 minutes to move forward.
The loss of Darderi means that none of the top-three seeds remains in the ATP 250, where top seeds Stefanos Tsitsipas and second seed tallon Greek track were on Tuesday.
Ninth Seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard won the full French fight against Alexandre Muller 6-3, 6-2 and Hungarian Marton Fucsovics Down 2017 Champion Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-3.
