Red Wings’ four-goal third period snuffs out Jets in a 5-1 loss

Despite the scandalously cold temperatures in Manitoba right now, Canada Life Center was sold out Saturday night as fans flooded the building to watch their hometown Winnipeg Jets undertake the visit Detroit Red Wings. But even after scoring first, the Jets allowed five unanswered goals, four of them in the third period, to end their three-game homestand with a 5–1 loss, falling to 20–24–7.
Just like Thursday against the Florida Panthersneither side found the back of the net for 20 minutes, with Detroit holding an 11-9 edge in shots.
Winnipeg opened the scoring at 10:08 of the second period when Morgan Barron won a draw in the offensive zone and gave the puck back to Logan Stanley at the blue line. Stanley stepped in a slap shot that hit Cole Koepke in front, and as he turned, Koepke backhanded the puck past Red Wings goaltender John Gibson for his fourth of the year, and his first since January 9 against the Kings of Los Angeles. It was Winnipeg’s first 5-on-5 goal since Jan. 17.
“Offensive draw, and Barron did a good job winning it back clear, and we just got bodies to the net,” Koepke said. “Stanley delivered it well, and it went off me, it landed there perfectly for me.”

The Red Wings responded just over five minutes later to tie the game, thanks to JT Compher’s seventh-place finish. The puck was next to the side of the net and Compher kept hitting it until it finally squeaked past Connor Hellebuyck just as Detroit’s power play was coming to an end.

The match remained tied at 1-1 after two periods, with Detroit leading by a total of 23-19.

Compher started Detroit’s four-goal final frame with his second of the night just 1:43 into the period, capping off a 3-on-2 rush with Emmitt Finnie and James van Riemsdyk with crisp passing play.

Lucas Raymond extended the Wings’ lead at 8:11 when his shot from in front deflected off Hellebuyck’s stick, popped up and went in off the crossbar. The play was reviewed for a high stick, when two Detroit players attempted to hit for the puck but both missed, leaving the goal standing.

Alex DeBrincat closed the game with an empty net goal at 18:11, and Marco Kasper added another at 18:43 to help the Wings improve to 32-16-5, good for first place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of the Lightning in Tampa Bay.

Jets head coach Scott Arniel didn’t hold back after the game, describing his team as too soft.

“We were looking for a pond hockey game. Don’t get hit, don’t hit anyone. Just play an easy, soft game,” Arniel said. “That’s kind of what we did for two periods, and in the third period it exploded.”
Things are only going to get tougher for the Jets as they hit the road for four straight games, starting Tuesday in New Jersey against the Devils. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 PM CST on TSN3.
