Columnist calls out surprising oil companies for ‘sucky’ contract

Shayna Goldman of The Athletic says she’s over the Edmonton Oilers. Goldman suggested that she was bored with the team and their endless storyline, that they were bad first and good later, and focused on a few new additions to the roster.

While a guest on Het Blad with Jeff Marek and Greg Wyshynski, Goldman shot Andrew Mangiapane and Trent Frederic for their contracts. She said, “Okay, here’s a new cast of supporting eingers and whoops, they all suck. So it’s getting so old so quickly.”

While there is some understandable concern about Frederic’s eight-year deal, Goldman’s targeting of Mangiapane has surprised many. Some of them claim that she clearly doesn’t watch Oilers hockey games. Mangiapane has scored four goals in 15 games and is on target for 21 this season. Sure, the Oilers would like him to produce a bit more on that top line with Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but for the $3.6 million he makes on a two-year deal, it’s not terrible production. He’s certainly not “sucked,” as Goldman put it.

He also scores at 5-on-5, meaning he won’t get a power-play boost in his production.

Ultimately, when Zach Hyman returns, Mangiapane will likely slide to the third line. That’s likely where he should fit on a healthy Oilers roster and what he thinks his salary will be. He is not paid like a top winger, but was signed as a top nine player who could perhaps score 18 to 20 goals.

Is Goldman right? Is Mangiapane worthless and is his contract as bad as she makes it out to be? Or is this a case of the winger not hitting it out of the park and being judged too harshly? One or two more goals in the next few games and Mangiapane is on his way to more than 25-30 goals this season.
