Red Sox’ Triston Casas shares cryptic message as buzz swirls about the future

This is a strange way to be ‘transparent’.

Go to Instagram On Tuesday, Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas posted a cryptic message next to an at-bat photo after missing much of the 2025 season due to a left patellar tendon rupture in the spring.

“If we want to have any chance of anything decent, issues like this need to be addressed. I’m going to try to be as transparent as possible… within reason. No illusions, just normalize the difficult conversation,” Casas, 25, wrote.

A former first-round pick in 2018, Casas hit just .182 in 29 games.

The Red Sox are coming off an 89-73 season that ended with a three-game wild-card series loss to the Yankees.

Boston chief baseball officer Craig Breslow gave an intriguing answer last month when discussing Casas and the team’s starting lineup.

The Red Sox used several players to man the spot in Casas’ absence this year.

“I don’t think it makes much sense to say on October 6 whether someone is or isn’t our first baseman,” Breslow saidaccording to Sports Illustrated.

“We’ll see how it plays out. Unfortunately, Triston has missed a significant amount of time over the last two years, but we’ve also seen what he’s capable of when he’s healthy.”

Boston could look very different in 2026 if pitcher Lucas Giolito declined his mutual option along with star third baseman Alex Bregman, who was just one season into a three-year, $120 million contract.

Bregman’s arrival in free agency was not without drama, as Red Sox veteran Rafael Devers was manning third base – a controversy Casas waded into in February.

“It’s Raffy Devers’ position,” Casas said. “He’s the third baseman and right now that’s where it’s at, and he’s done it for a long time now and he’s just getting better at the position. His defense is getting better every year, we don’t know what the future holds, but we do know Raffy Devers is in it.”

Devers eventually gave in to the role of design hitter before being traded to the Giants when he refused to play first base after Casas’ injury in June.

Before the close of the season, Casas remained hopeful of a 2026 opening day return.
