England wrote history and for the first time more than 300 runs, on an extraordinary night in Manchester while buried South Africa under a mountain of runs and fragmented statistics. Here, the difference, the difference here, the difference, the difference here, the difference, the difference here an almost runs.
From the very beginning, with boundaries that each of the first three balls of the day struck, Salt tore in the bowling of South Africa, just as he would tear up the record books in time. The result was the third highest team total in the history of international T20’s, behind only Zimbabwe’s 344 against Gambia last year and Nepal’s 314 against Mongolia in 2023, and an unbelievable target of 305 for the visitors to chase.
The only possible encouragement for the tourists was the fact that the only time that something is comparable remotely was achieved – the only time that a total above 250 has been submitted – it was by scoring 259 at home in West – Indies in March 2023.
But even that task was a Doddle compared to this, which remained only feasible for a short time.
They had no choice but to go fast from the start and for a while they managed to keep more or less the same pace with England, and reached 50 of the third ball of the fourth, only one delivery later than their opponents had a little earlier.
But if they were freewheeling for a while, it was exactly at that time that the wheels came off.
Ryan Rickelton was started by controlling Jofra Archer straight and low for four before he lifted it twice halfway, into almost identical places just past the border, for six. But with the score at exactly 50, he drew the next delivery to Liam Dawson at Midwicket and before that Lhuan-Dre Pretorius had closed his second legal ball to Luke Wood.
Dewald Brevis later went a few balls, and with that what was extremely unlikely that was hit carefully in the realm of outright impossibility.
From more or less matching England after 21 balls, the point when they reached 50, towards the end of the powerplay, 15 deliveries later, they were 36 behind and three wickets lower, and the rest was a formality.
With the climb of Jamie Smith, rested for this series together with Ben Duckett, SALT has become less central in this white-ball side, and he has not played a one-day international since England was beaten by South Africa in the Champions Trophy on the first day of March. But in the shortest size, his CV is exemplary: there have only been eight occasions when an English batter has reached a T20 -century and salt has now been responsible for four of them. His 119 in Tarouba at the end of 2023, formerly the all time of the nation, did not stand out almost as unfortunate and was subsequently subordinate as bowlers in South Africa at the end of this evening.
He only took 39 balls to reach triple figures, another national record, and hardly delayed from there. It is a measure of how remarkable his innings was that it turned the brilliant 30-ball 83 of Buttler into a footnote.
After the promotion of the newsletter
Buttler hit salt to his half century and reached that marking in the fifth to Salt’s ninth, and from 18 balls to Salt’s 19. The couple of them drove each other and the bowlers to distraction, proven by the series of no-balls admitted by their most important bowler, Kagiso Rabada.
It was Lizaad Williams who received the heaviest punishment, but his first two balls ping the crowd in the middle of Buttler’s bat to set the tone and are three overs eventually with only two pointed balls and 11 limits.
The teams only changed once, England brought in Archer for Jamie Overton and Zuid -Africa who picked the Spinner Bjorn Fortuin from Hampshire’s team for the Vitality Blast Finals Day of Saturday – he left for Edgbaston at the end of this game – to replace the injured Keshav Maharaj.
But from the moment that the players arrived in any other way in the early evening Mancunian sunshine, this game was completely different from the wild, rainwell and extremely unsatisfactory shootout that opened the series in Cardiff.
Harry Brook called a ‘mess’ that night, but if that was one night that did not go well for his men, this was the exact opposite for his revival.
