Recall: Do not use your Volvo EX90 power tailgate

2025 The Volvo EX90’s power tailgates need new drive units to prevent them from falling on people.

— A recall of the Volvo EX90 with power tailgate involves more than 1,200 SUVs because the tailgates can suddenly drop, a hazard that has led Volvo to warn against using the power tailgate feature until the vehicles are repaired.

Volvo blames the falling 2025 EX90 tailgates on spindle nuts that can come loose from the power tailgate drive units.

In particular, the spindle nut may become loose from the aluminum tube during operation of the EX90 tailgate due to insufficient shrinkage between the parts.

A 2025 Volvo EX90 driver should be aware of unusual noises coming from the tailgate drive units, and a consumer may also notice a bent drive unit. Additionally, a customer could be injured if the spring in the spindle becomes loose.

According to the car manufacturer, mistakes were made because the supplier simply mishandled parts, while defective parts were mixed with non-defective components.

The 2025 Volvo EX90 electric tailgate recall affects 118 SUVs in Canada.

Volvo expects to issue recall notices for the EX90’s power tailgate on November 18, 2025, after which dealers will replace both power units on the tailgate.

Again, do not use the power liftgates until they are repaired, but call 800-458-1552 if you have any questions. The Volvo number for this EX90 tailgate recall is R10342.

Volvo was recently sued over alleged problems with the tailgate, but the lawsuit is not related to the recall of the EX90 electric tailgate. In the lawsuit, a woman claims a dog activated a motion sensor and dropped the Volvo tailgate on her head.
