The FBI just left the suburbs for another unmarked ride

When you think about the tools the Federal Bureau of Investigation uses to accomplish its duties and missions, what comes to your mind? Windbreakers? High speed tactical equipment? You’re sure to conjure up mental images of black SUVs driving in a tight formation, carrying officers and high-value individuals. Obviously, these SUVs are almost always domestic makes and models, often Chevrolet Suburbans. Almost.

Four anonymous sources recently told the media that the FBI director is trading in the armored Chevrolet Suburbans for an unlikely, more expensive alternative. From 2026, director Kash Patel will drive around in armor BMW X5 SUVs. According to Forbesthe Bureau footed the bill for “an unspecified number of luxury armored BMW X5s for use by Patel.” While it may seem like a wild move for the director of a federal agency to drive around in German luxury SUVs, spokespeople for Patel and the FBI say the decision is a safety-oriented and cost-saving move.

Kash Patel recently asked the FBI to order several BMW SUVs as part of his personal transportation efforts. The move to equip Patel and his colleagues with the armored BMW X5s replaces the typical modified Chevrolet Suburbans found in such a role, and the decision has raised eyebrows.

Patel claims the BMW X5 is less “conspicuous” and would allow him to move more stealthily than upgraded Chevrolet Suburban executives have used in the past. True or not, the BMW X5 is more common on American streets than the hulking Suburban. Last year, Americans bought 42,543 Chevrolet Suburbans, 9,328 fewer than the X5’s sales figures in 2025. Of course, these are no ordinary BMW X5s.

New, armored BMW X5s

Believe it or not, BMW has been producing armored X5s for years and selling them to politicians, celebrities and wealthy customers. Built on the fourth-generation X5 platform, also known as the G05, the BMW X5 Protection VR6 takes the brand’s well-known mid-size SUV and adds protective measures from the factory.

For starters, the Even more traditionally vulnerable components have been hardened. The X5 Protection VR6, for example, will reportedly survive explosions of up to 15 kilograms of TNT from a distance of 4 meters, with BMW’s Post Blast Protective Technology defending against secondary attacks. The luxury car brand claims that even the windows will remain intact. As if that weren’t enough, the Add a martini machine to the mix, and it could easily pass for something Q would lend to 007.

A controversial move

Chevrolet fans aren’t the only ones unhappy about Patel’s move to add armored BMW X5s to the fleet. Former Justice Department official Stacey Young called the move “an embarrassment” for the tenured agency and its embattled director. Young criticized Patel MS nownoting that the head of one of the largest federal agencies in the United States has ordered “a new fleet of foreign cars to drive around.” Devastating, indeed.

News of Patel’s BMW order follows allegations that he misused an FBI jet to attend one of his girlfriend’s country music gigs in Pennsylvania. It’s an accusation that Patel called “baseless.” Additionally, some critics argue that the Bureau would have saved taxpayers money by purchasing multiple Suburbans at a discount instead of going for the armored BMWs. Ben Williamson, an FBI spokesman, claimed this was not the case, although he did not provide details of unit costs.

A break with Chevrolet

The purchase of BMW X5s represents a historical precedent change. For years, FBI directors have been traveling in the Suburban, Chevrolet’s popular full-size SUV. Like the BMW X5 Protection VR6, General Motors Defense offers the Suburban in armored flavors. For example, the Chevrolet Suburban Shield, which GM bills as its “next-generation armored, protected mobility solution,” is a factory-built armored version of the popular SUV. And like the X5 Protection VR6, GM says its armored body-on-frame SUV is “designed to look like an everyday utility vehicle.”

Official appearance, commendable hybrid power

Support the FBI’s move or not, the BMW X5 Protection VR6 looks good. In a darker shade, the BMW SUV looks aggressive and official, without appearing flashy or striking. In terms of performance, the BMW X5 Protection VR6 features a mild hybrid system that works together with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. The FBI says it’s a money-saving move

Interestingly, an Agency spokesperson claims that the switch to BMW SUVs is a cost-saving measure. The BMWs were reportedly “evaluated in part as a way to save taxpayers millions by making cheaper choices or making cost structures more efficient,” according to FBI spokesman Ben Williamson.

I know what you’re thinking. A BMW SUV with a twin-turbo V8 that costs less than a Chevrolet Suburban? Well, an anonymous source within the FBI reported that one of the FBI’s armored Chevrolet Suburbans would cost approximately $480,000 each. Forbes. The same source claimed that an armored BMW X5, like the one in Patel’s new fleet, costs less than half that. Forbes reported that the federal agency declined to comment on the move or the exact price of each X5.

Not the first time

This isn’t the first time a government official has turned away from a Chevrolet or Ford SUV for reasons of stealth. Depending on the mission or location, agencies will use specific vehicles to fly under the radar and transport officials without attracting too much attention.

For example, the US State Department has already used BMW X5s to move diplomats, officials and high-value individuals without attracting the same attention as a large, armored Suburban. However, this is the first time an FBI director has chosen to use BMW SUVs instead of more traditional vehicles. In the meantime, though, don’t expect hordes of BMW X5s to replace the standard SUVs found at FBI offices across the country.
