Calgary Flames Defender Rasmus Andersson will make the headlines this week while speculation will continue on his future with the team. After the big news in Calgary that Dustin Wolf has signed an extension of seven years and his future has been cemented with the flames, what happens to Anderson is still very in the air.
Flames Captain Mikael Backlund confirmed that there could be a trade, and reports in the summer suggested that Andersson would only consider signing an extension with a select few teams, which limit trade options for the flames. The Swedish Blueliner has now tackled those rumors and calls them “fake information” and states that he would never fascinate Flames’ management.
“The thing you are bothering is fake information that comes out,” Said Andersson. “I saw some reports that I would only sign with one team … nothing could be further from the truth. Connie and I had a few conversations in the summer, and I would never fascinate him and give him one team.”
He added that signing a deal would not be wise at the moment after a difficult season. “I grew up in the city, and I enjoyed it every second … Now it is the business side of it. Is it smart of me to sign up again after last season? I don’t know … I just have to get hot and worries about myself.”
In other words, and just like McDavid waits in Edmonton to see how strong a team will be the oilers and can put together, Andersson must know what is best for him when it comes to winning and his future in the long term. He does not feel that he is ready to make that decision.
If that means you are traded because the flames are not willing to wait, he understands that.
Most believe that there will be a trade in Anderson … but where?
Speaking on the NHL Player Media Tour in Europe, Backlund said: “Yes, he is traded. It is clear. But the team wants value. He wants a big contract. So he wants to play well. The team needs him to play well. Just go out and play.” Backlund added that Andersson tries not to be a distraction in the midst of uncertainty: “It is a pity that it has come to do so … we will see. Things can change.”
That said, Andersson wanted to make it clear that he is not enthusiastic to shoot from Calgary and he is not trying to make it difficult for the organization to continue if they think that is best. He does not tell Calgary that he will go to Vegas or Dallas alone. That is perhaps where he wants to sign as a free agent, but where he plays the 2025-26 season is the flames.
Since Craig Conroy became general manager, Calgary has undergone a major schedule turnover. Only four players stay out of the schedule of 2021–22: Backlund, Andersson, Blake Coleman and then Vladar. Andersson has developed into a top pair defender and remains one of the most valuable assets in the team. The persistent question is whether the flames see him as a cornerstone for the future or as a player whose value can be maximized through trade.
For now Andersson is aimed at starting the season, while the Front Office of the Flames weighs its options
