The first census questions about sexual orientation and gender are sent to thousands of households as part of a practical version of the Nationwide Survey 2026.
More than 60,000 houses were chosen by the Australian Bureau of Statistics to participate in a test run in August to ensure that the real event runs without incidents.
The test includes questions in the census of 2026, including the first series of questions in a national census about sexual orientation and gender for people older than 16.
Questions about sexuality were removed from the questionnaire, but the federal government went back on the decision in 2024 after criticism from LGBTIQ+ groups.
Houses in Melbourne and Perth, as well as locations in Regional Queensland, NSW and West -Australia, have been chosen for the Voluntary Testrun.
Census general manager Jenny Telford said that the test run would be crucial to ensure that the national questionnaire would be successful.
“We test our collective processes and IT systems to ensure that our processes work well and that the form records the right information in the right way,” she said.
“By participating, you help us to improve the next census for everyone and to ensure that it produces high -quality statistics.”
Testing will also be performed to enable people to carry out the census through Mygov.
The census of 2016 was affected by technical issues after the website that organized the questionnaire had crashed in the Night of the Survey.
The census test must be performed on August 5.
