Proton’s New Electric Vehicle (EV) factory in Tanjong Malim was launched by Prime Minister that Seri Anwar Ibrahim. As promised in an update in August, production starts this month and the first car that rolls from the factory floor is the Proton EMAs 7. Defects of the site took place in February.
The RM82 million factory has a first phase initial capacity of 20,000 units per year and the original target for completion was at the end of2025, so we are good within schedule. Also as planned, the CKD are provisionally assembled Proton Empar 7, and the smaller EMAS 5 afterwards. The EMAS 7, the first EV of Proton, launched in December 2024, is currently a CBU import from China.
According to Proton, this EV plant is designed with scalability in mind to adapt to future models and production volumes. In the course of time, the capacity can be weighed up to 45,000 units based on local and overseas demand.
There are some differences with the Ice Factories of Proton-De Nieuwe Fabriek has specialized battery assembly areas, high-voltage safety and electric tests, with tailor-made layouts to accommodate flat EV underupodies and electric drive units.
“For important areas, each line can add different stations, where their test lines are modular and able to accommodate platform variations or multimodel production. In the logistics area, the plant is capable of future expansion, with its logistics electricity and storage systems optimized to support both local and export markets,” Said Proton.
“Infrastructure such as utility systems, material treatment paths and digital traceability tools such as Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Warehouse Management System (WMS) are already present to support future scaling without significant redesign,” the company said. A machine test (MTO) test was performed to guarantee the preparation of equipment before calibration, validation and full production.
Proton EVs are in principle Geely models, and the Chinese giant offered technical guidelines for production systems, helped to select equipment and implemented experts to help with installation and test runs. The company based in Hangzhou also facilitated overseas training for proton staff and ensured that the factory was in line with the global EV production standards. 200 new jobs will be created with this new factory.
Today’s launch event also saw the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV) and Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) for a Rail Logistics Hub in TG Malim.
