The Kasaragod District Collector has ordered an inquiry into the boiler explosion that destroyed the decor panel industries section of Ananthapuram Industrial Estate, killing one worker and injuring around 10 others.
The explosion, which occurred on Monday evening, claimed the life of 19-year-old Nazirul Ali from Assam’s Udaiguri district and left several others with severe burns. At least three of the injured are said to be in critical condition. Rescue teams quickly took the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
In a statement, the District Collector said strict action would be taken once the investigation establishes the cause of the accident. The investigation has been transferred to the Chemical Emergency Response Center (CHEMREC) section of the Factories and Boilers Department, Ernakulam, which will investigate possible safety lapses and determine the reasons behind the blast.
The Collector said further action will be taken based on the CHEMREC report and assured that those violating safety norms would be dealt with sternly. The Collector added that detailed findings on the cause of the explosion will be made public only after the inquiry report is received.
Security has been tightened
Meanwhile, police have tightened security around the factory site and access is restricted.
The factory ran full time. About twenty workers were working at the time of the explosion. About 300 people, mainly migrant workers, work at the unit.
The factory is located just 500 meters from the historic Anathapura Lake Temple. K. Janardhana Poojary, ward member of Puthige gram panchayat, said the windows and doors of houses within a radius of 300 meters were shattered.
