Rubio testified that Maduro’s capture was actually leaked to the media by a Pentagon contractor.
As previously reported, the FBI raided the home of a Washington Post reporter who obtained classified and illegally leaked information from a Pentagon contractor.
Feds executed a search warrant in Alexandria, Virginia, home of WaPo reporter Hannah Natanson earlier this month, as part of an investigation into a Maryland system administrator who holds a high security clearance.
The contractor who stashed the secret documents in his home, Aurelio Perez-Lugones, is currently in prison.
FBI agents reportedly found classified intelligence reports in Perez-Lugones’ lunchbox and basement.
Rubio said the Pentagon contractor leaked Maduro’s conquest plans.
The US military’s Delta Force captured Maduro earlier this month. The leaked plans could have caused damage to the special operators.
“The truth is, this was leaked! Leaked by a War Department contractor. If it had been published, it would have endangered people’s lives or destroyed the ability to carry out the mission!” Rubio said.
“The truth is that this mission could not be informed to Congress because it was not possible until the end of December, when all our attempts to negotiate with Maduro had failed and the president was finally presented with these options and made these decisions,” he said.
Rubio continued: “It was also a trigger-based operation.”
“Maybe it never happened. It took a number of factors to get everything aligned in the right place at the right time in a very limited time frame. And it wasn’t even clear if it would ever be possible,” he said.
