Premier League team of the weekend: Eze, Barnes, Wilson

Our weekend Premier League team celebrates the best performers from the past two days.

Only one club has multiple entries this week, with a nice spread of teams represented in our line-up.

Premier League team of the weekend

GK: Alphonse Areola – West Ham United

After a brilliant first half, which saw West Ham take a two-goal lead over Bournemouth, Alphonse Areola faced a barrage of shots from the Cherries in the second.

The French goalkeeper made a series of stunning saves to ensure the Hammers emerged from Dean Court with a point. The best of which was when he stopped Eli Junior Kroupi with his feet from eight meters. And he set up Callum Wilson’s opener with a brilliant long ball.

There wasn’t much Areola could do about Marcus Tavernier’s thunderous penalty or Enes Unal’s excellent finish, and those goals shouldn’t take away from what was by far his best ever performance in the Premier League.

RB: Daniel Munoz – Crystal Palace

Daniel Munoz remains the most exciting attacking full-back in the Premier League, although his goal against Wolves was atypical for him. The Crystal Palace man took advantage of a loose ball from a corner and tapped in from close range.

Munoz also contributed on the defensive end, with eight turnovers, three recoveries and one tackle.

CB: Tosin Adarabioyo – Chelsea

Keeping a clean sheet against the worst attack in the Premier League should be a given for a team like Chelsea, but it shouldn’t take away from Tosin Adarabioyo’s performances. The defender was solid throughout, winning the most duels (10) of all players on the pitch and completing the most passes (102).

CB: Murillo – Nottingham Forest

Murillo has to be one of the most fun centre-backs to watch in the game right now. The man from Nottingham Forest is a unit that is almost impossible to bully, even when he has the ball. He loves putting the ball into contact and bouncing off opponents like they’re crash test dummies, and isn’t afraid of taking a hit from distance either.

The Brazilian helped sideline Liverpool and scored the third goal of his Forest career as they secured a second successive win at Anfield. One of the best purchases the club has ever made.

LB: Neco Williams – Nottingham Forest

There are few things as fun as beating your old team on their home field. Even better if you play a key role. Neco Williams set up Forest’s second equalizer after the break, had the most tackles (6) and won the most duels (14). A monster display from the Welshman.

CM: Elliot Anderson – Nottingham Forest

If you want to know why Thomas Tuchel is keen to take Elliot Anderson to the World Cup next summer, take a look at his performance for Forest last weekend. The midfielder has made so many defensive contributions (16) that we would be here all day if we listed them individually. Not only that, he also created three chances.

CM: Bruno Guimaraes – Newcastle United

Bruno Guimaraes is simply Mr. Consistent for Newcastle. It feels like his performance level rarely drops below 8/10 and he was fantastic against Manchester City on Saturday. The Brazilian linked up excellently with Harvey Barnes for their opener and was also involved in the second, with his header coming off the crossbar before falling to Barnes again.

CAM: Eberechi Eze – Arsenal

Morgan Rogers already had this position under control until Eberechi Eze went into beast mode at Spurs. The playmaker produced three excellent finishes to become the Arsenal player since 1978 to score a hat-trick against Spurs. He almost had a fourth place right after he also scored his third.

RW: Yankuba Minteh – Brighton

Brentford’s Kristoffer Ajer must be wondering what mistake he must have made in a previous life when he was tasked with defending against Yankuba Minteh on Saturday. The Norway international can play as a centre-back or right-back, but Keith Andrews left him out to dry by deploying him on the left.

Minteh spun rings around the 27-year-old, who could not get to grips with the winger’s quick feet and tricky skills. The Brighton youngster provided a delightful assist for Danny Welbeck’s equalizer before being involved in the build-up to the winner. His blocked shot fell to Jack Hinshelwood, who made no mistake on the rebound.

CF: Callum Wilson – West Ham United

Callum Wilson saw that all your messages were calling him wrong and went on a mission to undermine you. Bournemouth were his target and he scored two of the best goals of his career in the first half. Unfortunately for him and West Ham, it wasn’t enough to secure the win as the Cherries staged a comeback in the second half to draw 2–2.

LW: Harvey Barnes – Newcastle United

A sensational performance from Harvey Barnes saw Newcastle secure victory over City and grab a brace at St. James’ Park to give their season a much-needed boost.

The winger had some great interplay with Bruno before putting the ball into the side netting from the edge of the penalty area. He was again involved in the build-up before grabbing a rebound and netting his second.

Barnes could have scored even more goals; he saw a very early chance saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma before missing a golden opportunity in the first half.
