Pottawattomie Country Club selects Raymond Hearn to make a long -distance master plan

Award -winning golf course architect Raymond Hearn, ASGCA, was selected by the historic Pottawattomy Country Club for a renovation and restoration of the classic golf course from 1909 in Michigan City, IND.

The original nine holes (current holes 10-18) were designed by the legendary Tom Bendelow, and in 1965 architect Bob Simmons designed the second nine in Indiana (currently 1-9).

“What an honor and privilege it is to collaborate with this great historical club,” said Hearn, founder of Raymond Hearn Golf Course Designs. “Our goal is to make an extensive master plan that entails sympathetic recovery with a conventional restoration. The history, membership, site and course routing are all excellent. We are currently involved in three excellent gangway designed. The club is so unique with its membership drawing of three different states (I am looking closely with them. ‘

Greens Committee Chairman David Baldwin said that Hearn was the unanimous selection of the club’s board from an original list of 10 remarkable architects.

“As soon as we started working with Ray, everyone saw why we chose his company for the project,” said Baldwin. “His work at Midlothian Country Club (1898) and Flossmoor Country Club (1899) In the vicinity of Chicago made a real impression on us. Ray shares the same passion and respect that we have designed for our unique gangow nine and Simmons designed front nine. He talks about polishing a real golf course.”

Baldwin, who, like different members of Chicago Roots, said that Hearn will work closely with the Master Planning Committee and the most important staff on design ideas, priorities and phasing of projects, and he will also offer opportunities for our entire membership to express their ideas.

“I loved the way Ray approached the club and our golf course,” he said. “I think some of us were worried about let an architect come in and say that they want to change things dramatically. It was clear that Ray wanted to keep our history.”

Jamie Baldwin, who is not a family of David Baldwin, is a member of the third generation of the club of Michigan City and a member of the Master Plan Committee. He said he is happy that the board has selected Hearn for the project.

“After I had heard him talk, I saw that he realized that we have a course with two nines from different eras, but nine that I think most of us complement each other,” said Jamie Baldwin. “I was also happy that he wanted to go our perspective on it. He saw celebrating from us, driving and pointing to things he could see in the design that Bendelow created. He saw what we like about our golf course. He is also willing to listen with us and work with us so that we do not have to close the course completely.”
