Portsmouth have opted not to sign Enda Stevens and will not sign a free left back. The news has said.
Portsmouth have had a challenging campaign so far. It wasn’t good enough across the board at Fratton Park, but Pompey were again left to rue their luck on the injury front.
John Mousinho’s squad has been plagued by injuries for much of the 2024/2025 season, and they continue to suffer setbacks this time around. Most recently they were without both of their left-backs: Connor Ogilvie and Jacob Farrell.
That has raised the question of a possible Hampshire free agent deal, but after careful consideration, Portsmouth will not make such a signing.
The news reports that Pompey are considering a deal to bring back Enda Stevens, who will then be available for nothing leaving Stoke City in the summer. However, the 35-year-old will not be signed and Mousinho will now work with what he has until the January window arrives.
No reunion in Portsmouth for Enda Stevens as a new club awaits
After numerous EFL loans at Aston Villa, Stevens signed for Portsmouth on a free transfer in 2015. He would stay there for two years and gain promotion under Paul Cook before leaving for Sheffield United.
Enda Stevens’ Portsmouth stats
He traveled through the leagues with the Blades, reaching the Premier League, where he spent six years at Bramall Lane. Stevens would then spend two years at Stoke City until his release in the summer.
At 35, the next move will likely be one of the last in Stevens’ career. A return to a club like Pompey, where he enjoyed so much success, would be a fitting move.
A Fratton Park reunion may not be on the horizon, but Stevens could end up joining one of his former clubs. The 26-time Republic of Ireland international made a name for himself in his native country with Shamrock Rovers, and it recently emerged that he is training with the club ahead of a possible deal.
Who will Portsmouth target at left-back?
With Ogilvie joining Farrell on the sidelines, Portsmouth are without a natural left back.
The ranks of the Pompey academy have rarely been called upon for depth. It is more likely that someone out of position will replace until one of the offside players returns or a contract can be agreed in January.
Mousinho switched to a back three in the last two games. Ogilvie started against Wrexham, but it was Jordan Williams who took his place on the left for Hull City.
Of the available full-backs, Williams is the most adept at operating on the opposite flank. Zak Swanson has done that before, while Ibane Bowat could always be called in when a more defensive option was required, namely a left-footed centre-back.
It will probably be Williams who starts on the left against Millwall this weekend. Although none of the left backs are fit, Callum Lang, Nicolas Schmid and Adrian Segecic are back in training.
