The Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team remained in town Saturday afternoon while SUNYAC play continued, hosting the Oswego State Lakers at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals, winners of a tight 1-0 battle Friday against Canton, were looking to extend their win streak to six games and remain undefeated in conference action. Entering the match, Plattsburgh held the historic advantage in the series, leading Oswego State 50-3-2 all-time between the two rivals.
Despite early chances, the match remained scoreless through the opening period before Plattsburgh struck first in the second. Just under eight minutes on screen, freshmen Bailey Mackellar(Hamburg, NY) picked up a pass from senior Emily Kasprzak(Niagara Falls, NY) and junior Maeghan Forsyth (Billings, Mont.) and fired in the only goal of the period, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Lakers turned the tide in the third period. Georgia Cunliffe tied the game at one, assisted by Julia Power and Jenna Majewski, before Kayla Doerre put Oswego State ahead with helpers from Erika Parenti and Alexandra O’Brien. The two unanswered goals proved decisive as Oswego held on for a 2-1 victory over Plattsburgh.
Oswego State’s Mia Devivo earned the victory with 30 saves on 31 shots, while Plattsburgh’s Maddy Stetson made 19 stops in the loss. With the result, the Cardinals fell to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in SUNYAC play on the season. Plattsburgh returns to action Friday afternoon and remains in conference competition when they host Potsdam with a puck drop at Ronald B. Stafford Arena at 4 p.m.
